Few series have the sheer amount of characters as One Piece does, a single arc seemingly introducing ten to fifteen more characters. It can be a strength and a flaw as the amount can cause some of the characters to fade into obscurity. One person who doesn't have that issue is Shanks, a supremely powerful pirate who's only popped up here and there after the first arc.

Shanks has a charming aura about him that pulls people in, just as it has with his crew. It makes seeing more of his history interesting, even if some of those details end up making very little sense.

10 The Way His Face Has Changed

Shanks Newer Look In One Piece Manga

When Shanks first appeared, he had a youthful-looking expression with a soft jawline and pointed chin. As time has worn on, his appearance has shifted, looking more weathered. His jaw is squared and markedly more bridged, lending itself to a more manly or aged face than what he had before.

The reason for it is that Oda's art style has progressed as he's grown as an artist. It's still strange to see him slowly change throughout the years as if each year in the manga is a decade for him.

9 Panicking When Things Don't Go His Way

Shanks and Buggy One Piece

It's one thing if Shanks were just any old pirate captain. It'd make sense for him if he were inexperienced and used to things going smoothly. Where things go off the rails is that Shanks isn't the average man.

He's one of the most well-known pirates in the world and one of the Four Emperors. Someone with that level of standing should be able to handle a little adversity, especially with how skilled he is as a diplomat.

8 Entrusting Luffy With Roger's Straw Hat

Luffy, Ace, One Piece

It's a symbolic gesture on Shanks part as he sees Luffy as the future of all pirates and that he expects Luffy to return it once he becomes a great pirate, helping spur Luffy to even greater heights.

It helps bond the two, but there's no way Shanks could have felt any of this when they first met. Luffy was far too young for Shanks to see anything more than himself in the boy. Even then, that hat meant so much to Shanks that it's hard to believe he'd part with it.

7 His Standing With The World Government

Five elders one piece

Considering the World Governments constant conflicts with pirates and their part in the battle with Whitebeard, it's strange that they hold Shanks with the level of regard they do. They are by no means overly friendly, knowing they would need to kill him if the time ever arose, but they still do allot him luxuries not given to other pirates.

Among them is being granted an audience with the Five Elders, something that very easily could have backfired. While he's not a direct threat, you'd think they'd still want to keep him at arm's length.

6 Mutual Respect With Sengoku

Sengoku one piece

A man who directly had a hand in the deaths of so many pirates should be despised by Shanks, and the same holding true for Sengoku. Instead, the two of them have mutual respect, never wanting to raise their hand against the other, seeing it as a last resort.

Logistically it makes sense, but considering everything Sengoku has done to pirates everywhere, it's hard to understand why Shanks would choose the diplomatic route, despite how pacifistic he is.

5 Fear His Mere Presence Brings

Shanks One Piece Yonko

He's been able to stop wars, sending Blackbeard scurrying away, and can strike fear into the highest ranks of the world's government. It's a reputation expected from someone who is among the Four Emperors, even one as young as him.

It will also make his first true fight feel incredibly epic when it happens. The problem is that he's the youngest of the Emperors, yet he's treated as if he's the biggest threat among them. Strange since Whitebeard was supposedly the strongest pirate alive at the time.

4 Matching Whitebeards Blow With One Arm

A clash between Whitebeard and Shanks

For all the hype around Whitebeard, most of it lived up to, the fact that Shanks could defend against the mammoth Emperors strike with one arm is rather head-scratching.

It helps build up Shanks as a fighter, which was the whole point of their fight, but it also further brings into question why Shanks wasn't referred to as the strongest pirate on the sea. It's also hard to logistically see how it was even possible given their size difference and Shanks lack of appendage.

3 Anime Cutting Shanks Celebration Over Luffy's Bounty

Shanks and Mihawk

4kids is known for editing their anime to an upsetting degree. But no explanation can be given for how chopped up and unfaithful the scene where Shanks learns about Luffy's bounty is. Due to the references to alcohol, most of it was cut, ruining the jovial tone the scene was meant to have.

Instead, Mihawk arrives to give the news, and Shanks comes off evil, saying he can't let the swordsman leave. It just ends on that as well, forcing the viewer to wonder what actually happens.

2 Australian Accent

Red-Hair Shanks in One Piece.

Another lovely 4kids addition is the fact that Shanks has an Australian accent in it. The reason why is an utter mystery as it really adds nothing to the character. It's one of the biggest issues with 4kids, beyond their obvious censorship problems.

They seem to make changes for the sake of it. Adding an accent isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's the same as changing a character's gender. It lacks any sort of point at all.

1 Using A Shotgun In The Video Games

Red-Haired Shanks, Emperor of the Sea, looking determined in One Piece.

Admittedly, a bit of creative freedom with games is needed so the roster can be properly diversified. In this case, the shotgun is used for combo purposes and one of his ultimate attacks.

It's just odd that a shotgun would be chosen for a character that's known to be more of a pacifist. If one is going to add things in for game purposes, it should be within the realm of what they'd use in the series, such as Kushina in the Ninja Storm games being more of a joke character who used frying pans.
