One Piece is the beloved anime series focused on the adventures and misadventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew. As an ensemble cast, each member of this seafaring party has their own role to play, each talent benefiting the mini-ecosystem within the Thousand Sunny.

However, if there was ever a particular skill that is not only essential for navigating the Grand Line's harsh waters but even just finding the titular One Piece in the first place, it would be cartography, the capacity of an individual to draw out and read maps. Given the gravity that his particular skill set has over the Straw Hats' own adventure, this list will be ranking every main character according to their own cartography expertise. Number 1 might just surprise you. Or not.

10 Roronoa Zoro

Ranking oh so low on this list, Roronoa Zoro is the least equipped person to be guiding the crew or steering the ship, let alone draw a map for everyone. He is a character infamous for being bad at directions. When someone tells him exactly where he needs to go, even if that means just going forward, Zoro will either go left, right, or just outright teleport to another direction.

Zoro will go everywhere but his intended destination. As wonderful of a navigational track record as Zoro has, it's better to let the man just be the crew's swordsmen. For this particular user, the pen would not be mightier than the sword.

9 Monkey D. Luffy

Just slightly beating out Zoro (just slightly), Luffy ranks higher on this list for pretty much just being able to know where forward is. His navigational philosophy on Syrup village (North is where you get cold. South is where you get warm) may not be accurate, but it at least defines some direction and consistency, of which Luffy does manage to abide by.

However, this list will still remove some points from the Straw Hats' captain, as he also seems to struggle with simple penmanship and artistic perspective. Those are kind of important for making a map, in so many words, readable.

8 Tony Tony Chopper

Tony Tony Chopper has never needed to make a map in the series' history, but he gains a major advantage over the previous two for at least being educated and literate. He is very much a person who's learned his lesson about being able to read and now studies from a variety of texts. That alone should make Chopper more than capable of at least reading a map.

However, Chopper would still be pretty unreliable as the ship's cartographer given the pure fact that he's a childlike reindeer who spent most of his life isolated on a winter island. One of his most consistent and cutest character traits is his tendency to be surprised and be in awe over the crew's tales of adventure, "surprise" being the operative word in defining his naivete.

7 Brook

Getting closer to the top, this list reaches an individual who, at least, probably had to read a map during his career. As the ex-captain of the Rumbar Pirates, Brook at one point had to be responsible for navigating his crew across good portions of the world.

While that might not necessarily translate to accurate navigational or cartography skills, it at least suggests that Brook has been around the block a few times, getting a much more defined view of the world than some members of the crew. Also, as an ex-rockstar, Brook also had to tour the world, a career that innately has clearly defined tour spots and routes.

6 Sanji

Sanji cuts down the middle of the crew's cartography skills, since, as a prince of an advanced nation, he must have, at one point, been educated enough to learn how to read and write as well as learn parts of the world and their history (this is being generous towards Vinsmoke Judge's parenting).

Sanji's homeland is also a traveling island traversing much more than his native North Blue, meaning that he must have at least seen a few other islands within the world before escaping to the East Blue. While there, he would join another ship as an apprentice chef, possibly learning about navigation on top of cooking.

5 Franky

Franky One Piece

As someone who has not only built an entire career around building ships but also apprenticed under the designer of the ocean-spanning Sea Train, it would suffice to say that Franky has some navigational and cartographic expertise. Understanding the layout of his surrounding territories just seems like a native territory to designing versatile ships and learning about Tom's prime project.

At the very least, as someone who has needed to outline design plans for his various projects, Franky should have clear enough writing and design skills to make a half-decent map, one utilizing accurate proportions and dimensions.

4 Usopp

While not as clearly or specifically educated as Chopper, Sanji, or Franky, Usopp gains major points here for being a literate individual who has had a taste for the sea ever since he was young. With that comes the territory of possibly learning about the world outside of Syrup Village, dreaming of and studying the various landmarks his dad had once adventured and that he would one day cross.

Usopp also managed to find his way to the Sabaody Archipelago after having been stranded on the jungle territory of the Boin Archipelago, arguably the least developed and charted area that any of the Straw Hats were sent to, so managing to find his way from there must've been quite a feat. On top of all that, being the artist behind the crew's jolly roger, Usopp also has the penmanship skills necessary to draw a pretty good map.

3 Jinbei

Here's hoping to seeing more of Jinbei within the series, the former warlord has a menagerie of skills to offer the Straw Hat crew. While Whole Cake Island hinted that he might become the helmsman of the crew, Jinbei already has leagues of experience exploring the world, whether as a part of the Fishman Pirates, doing missions as a Warlord, or traveling the seas for Big Mom.

Having the ability to steer the ship is just icing on the cake to qualities that might lead to Jinbei himself being a pretty good map drawer.

2 Nico Robin

Nearing the top of this list, Nico Robin is an archaeologist by trade, a career that innately demands knowledge of the territories of the world on top of their history. Within her exploits as the runaway Demon Child, Nico Robin had aligned herself and traveled with various pirate groups and international organizations.

Working with Baroque Works alone meant that Nico Robin had to manage a variety of groups across various locations around the world. Being a consistent reader also lends the ex-assassin to further knowledge of the world as well as some legibility.

1 Nami

Finding #1 on this list...was not hard to do, just like how it's not hard for her to find...well...anything. As the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates, Nami's role in the crew is clear. It is her responsibility to read maps and make sure they don't get lost. Nami's exact dream and prodigy level skill rely on the fact that she must be pretty good with drawing maps.

Nami has had a curious mind and a budding study for learning about the different territories for the world ever since she was little, even when that meant traversing it for the Arlong Pirates. At the very least, she is the only person ever seen in the series to have ever drawn a map. Considering that it didn't look too shabby, Nami takes the number one spot easily.
