One Piece is famous for a variety of things. It has a grand world full of pirate battles and adventures. Its history is deeply detailed between a mysterious history and the intertwining developments of different nations. And It made people cry over a ship. However, if there was one towering figure to define all there is to One Piece, it would be the man commanding its leading ship, "Straw Hat" Monkey D. Luffy.

Balancing stoicism, childlike wonder, and hilarious cartoonishness so well, anime's Mr. Fantastic is one of the most beloved figures in Japan's media scene, with much of that owing to a deeply understood history and personality that's been built over the course of 20 years. And in celebration of all that character development, this list will be honoring the qualities most cherished by the series' fandom, as it runs some of the best memes they had to offer.

10 A Quick Summary of One Piece

Essentially, Luffy is captain of the crew just because he was the one with the pirating idea, and he'd probably complain if anyone else tried. All of his decisions come strictly from the heart, as they obviously don't come from the brain, as poor and irrational decision after irrational decision pushes the Straw Hats into further and further turmoil.

Making more executive pushes than executive decisions, Luffy's entire mission statement centers around what could be fun rather than what's exactly safe for the crew, leading to a resounding and practiced "Are you kidding me?" look from all of his crew.

9 Your Captain's an Idiot

Building from the above, the Straw Hat crew has a variety of facial expressions used to define how much of a break they need from the pirating life. Zoro, most of all, knows the kind of nonsense his beloved captain can get him through, yet that still won't stop that deep-seeded falling feeling that happens whenever Luffy gets that excited smile.

Considering that Zoro is the stoic hero known for going through some of the series' harshest and bloodiest battles, that look of concern is certainly saying something about whatever plan Luffy has hatched up.

8 Gets Even More Dumber

One would think that a two-year break to train and reflect on one's own devices and plans would allow a person to mature and grow. The idea of a time skip itself invokes the idea that considerable change is about to happen to its central cast, as it does.

But rather than become the responsible, safe minded captain that his crew so badly needs, Luffy goes the completely other direction and goes all-in on the adventurous lifestyle he is all too accustomed to. Deciding between a safe island, a slightly dangerous island, and one that may very well not even exist, Luffy is taking curtain number 3. There might be candy there.

7 Disguise Mode

To be fair, it worked. After the time skip, Boa Hancock took the much-needed precaution of disguising Luffy before he reentered the pirating scene. However, she really could have made a better attempt at it. Even Clark Kent ruffles his hair a bit and slouches.

Luffy just walked across enemy lines with a Groucho Marx mustache and somehow wasn't identified until the blasted thing fell off. Other than that, he completely matches his original bounty poster, not even taking the time to change shirts.

6 Have You Seen This Boy?

A major thing that cannot be understated when it comes to One Piece is how much Luffy's adopted brothers love him. It's an enviable relationship, as they go out of their way sometimes to talk about him, whether that means Sabo celebrating Luffy's new wanted poster with the Revolutionary Army or Ace hunting down Shanks just to reminisce about Luffy.

It's a love very much shared with the series' fans, as the two of the most influential leaders in the pirating world still take pride in the antics of their little brother.

5 Luffy Trains Hard

Roronoa Zoro pretty much just seems like the only Straw Hat who trains before and after the time skip, and he absolutely goes ham when working on his weights. He is the very definition of hard work and perseverance manifesting in precise and fine-tuned skills. Luffy on the other hand very much needed the time skip.

Otherwise, he is pretty much the laziest Shonen protagonist, spending the time that any other Shonen series would use for a training montage to eat large chunks of food.

4 You Expect Him to Say Something Serious

If anything, this is exactly why tons of people love Luffy. Rather than taking himself too seriously, Luffy is very much susceptible to the keenest bit of flattery.

More often than not, a tense scene within the series is immediately dissipated as Luffy comically yet surprisingly skillfully struggles to find his footing. It's that balancing act between endearing emotion and accessible humor that helps Luffy stand out as a fun face for the series. Nothing really stays serious in the series, as Luffy's innocent personality shines through everything.

3 Eternal Problem

Luffy is the type of person who will ask a question that initially sounds stupid but will end up haunting viewers forever, as they try and rationalize the question, "Wait! How can they poop?!"

A reoccurring gag throughout the series, Luffy's obsession with how things poop stems more from a childlike curiosity rather than any deep interest in the person he's talking to. This doesn't mean that Luffy is totally an oblivious jerk, but if he's going to interact with an interesting person, he needs to get whatever's on his mind out of the way.

2 He Can't Be a Yonkou

This is a debate that will be tearing away at the One Piece community, until Luffy finally defeats a Yonkou. Until then, there is a ton of ambiguity as to whether Luffy has really earned that status, separating the fan base significantly more than the fictional claim by an admittedly questionable fictional reporter was meant to do.

There are still a ton of milestones Luffy has yet to reach on his journey to Pirate King, but he has accomplished all of the above. If anything, it is unique for a Shonen anime debate to try and humble its main character.

1 But the Ship is Too Far Away...

This image right here knows how to draw a strong emotional reaction just from a distorted frame. If there's anything to consistently terrify the Straw Hat crew, it's Luffy's own distaste for walking a few feet. His tendency to slingshot his way through life is something profoundly entertaining for the visual spectacle and the visual performance of the unlucky sap who couldn't find another ride.

If any of the crew ever has the misfortune of being partnered with Luffy during an expedition (something that the Straw Hats have literally drawn straws for), then they know that they have to soon prepare themselves for moving from point A to point B at an unnecessarily catapulted rate.
