The Straw Hat Pirates are a loveable group of misfits. Known by the general public of One Piece as a group of ruthless pirates, the people whose lives they’ve touched usually hold them in high regard. There were also many times where people didn't feel the most comfortable around the Straw Hats, especially their famed captain.

Luffy has a very forward demeanor. His attitude is what makes such a charismatic and likable person within One Piece as well as a very enjoyable character for readers. But for some of the people he meets, he can come off as blunt, rude, and possibly even mean.

10 Meeting Coby For The First Time & laughing at him

Luffy and coby first meeting

After their initial meeting in the first episode, Coby decided to confide in Luffy about how he has been under the iron thumb of a vicious pirate, struggling to survive for the past two years.

Then Coby tells him about his dream of becoming a marine, but how he is too afraid of these same pirates to pursue that dream. Instead of being kind and deciding to just lend an ear, Luffy decides to laugh in his face then calls Coby an idiot and a coward.

9 Telling Kin'emon & Momo No When They Asked For Help

Luffy riding Momonosuke

In Episode 771, Kin'emon and Momo decided, after a few voyages with the Straw Hats, that they are people they can have faith in to help them with their current problems. They reveal to the Straw Hats the current state of their home country; how Kaido came in, murdered Momo’s father, and is currently ruling over Wano with an iron fist.

Even after they finally built up the courage to ask, Luffy decided to deny their request and goes on to call Momo a crybaby and refuse help unless Momo (currently an 8-year-old child) "mans up" and stops crying over the hostile takeover of his home country.

8 Luffy’s first meeting with the mermaid princess left her in tears

Princess Shirahoshi from One Piece with open mouth looking shocked.

Towards the beginning of the Fishman Island arc, Shirahoshi decides to let Luffy have her food after he saves her from an assassination attempt. While Luffy is enjoying the food the mermaid princess kindly offers to him, she comments about how chubby his cheeks look and Shirahoshi innocently pokes Luffy's cheek, which causes him to spit out his food.

Luffy then screams at her which causes her to cry and then proceeds to laugh at her and say he doesn't like her because she's crying.

7 Luffy throws a punch after Arguing With Vivi

Luffy and Princess Vivi fighting

When the Straw Hats were helping this particular princess with her country's politics, she and Luffy get into a heated argument. In Episode 104, Vivi slaps Luffy first, and Luffy fights back with a punch straight to her face.

At first, it only seemed fair that if she attacked Luffy that he defended himself, but one has to remember the fact that with his gum-gum powers, that slap most likely didn’t physically hurt Luffy, yet he still decked her face hard enough for her to slide a few feet away.

6 Making Fun Of Buggy’s Nose

Anime One Piece Buggy The Clown Surprised

Luffy has made many enemies in his travels as a pirate, some because of a difference of ideas, some because of competition, or others through the fact that he completely ruined plans they carefully built up for years. But none came as easily as Buggy the Clown in the middle of the Orange Town arc.

Buggy has one insecurity, he is very protective over the size, shape, and color of his nose. Luffy does not care and does not hesitate for one moment to call it out and make fun of him for it.

5 When he Stole Shanks’ Devil Fruit

Young Luffy eating Gum-Gum fruit in One Piece.

Even while young, Luffy still managed to get himself into lots of trouble, shown to viewers in the first few episodes of the series. When the Red-Haired pirates decided to leave the gum-gum fruit on the counter of a bar in Luffy’s hometown, (arguably a bad idea on their part) Luffy saw it as his time to shine.

Even knowing that the chest was owned by a dangerous group of pirates, Luffy still decided that he wanted to eat it and nothing was going to stop him. In the single moment the group of pirates weren’t attentive, Luffy took and ate the entire fruit.

4 Convincing Franky To Join The Crew

When Luffy decides he wants someone to join his crew, that person usually doesn’t have much of a choice when it comes down to it, and this was especially true for Franky, the Straw Hat’s current shipwright. After everything is said and done in the Water Seven/Enies Lobby arcs, Luffy eventually grabs hold of his undergarments and tells Franky he can’t have them back unless he joins the crew.

Meanwhile, Franky is standing unclothed in front of all the townspeople he grew up around. Luckily Franky is not someone who would be bogged down by something as trivial as that.

3 Luffy & Sanji bully Mohmoo

Mohmoo after attacked by Luffy and Sanji

While traveling through the seas of the One Piece world, one is sure to come across many strange and fascinating things, like the fantastical sea monsters known as Sea Kings.

When Mohmoo (the sea-cow owned by Hachi of the Arlong Pirates) stops by the Straw Hats ship for the first time in Episode 31, Luffy decides to attack him completely unprovoked. To add insult to injury, Sanji deceives the poor creature by offering it some food and then also attacking him when he comes close.

2 Stealing From The Shandians

Shandian warriors ready for war

The Straw Hats are not a group that does things for a price, they do what they do in pursuit of their dreams, for the people they care about, and to get justice for the wrongdoings of others. But when it came to Jaya, Luffy decided that he wanted what was owed to him.

He decides, at the end of the Sky Island arc, to steal gold from the ancient civilization of Jaya. From a place where the original people weren't allowed access to for generations. Not only that, but this place was also the ancient ruins of a lost civilization.

1 Mocking His Fellow Straw Hats

Luffy mocking Chopper

As close friends as the Straw Hats are, of course, they can joke around and have fun times together. While usually all in good fun, Luffy takes this to another level. Usually by impersonating some of the other Straw Hats and their personality traits. Sometimes even some of their shortcomings.

While it’s hilarious and scarily accurate, sometimes the Straw Hat captain does not have the best timing. Namely when they were exploring in the middle of the Sky Island arc, searching for their kidnapped comrades. Luffy takes the time to make fun of Sanji, which Sanji didn’t end up appreciating much, and hits him and Usopp for laughing.
