Iñaki Godoy of Netflix’s upcoming One Piece adaptation is taking his role as a pirate very seriously.

In a recent Instagram post, the actor revealed he’s preparing for a three-month voyage around the Caribbean seas. Unlike Luffy, Godoy will not be captaining the vessel, but will become a part of its crew, taking on duties that include cooking, cleaning and helping to navigate between islands. Regarding the latter, he tagged costar Emily Rudd, who is taking on the role of Nami in Netflix’s adaptation, implying that with his newfound skills he may be gunning for her duties as the Going Merry’s navigator. However, Godoy followed up with the self-deprecating hashtags #ihavenoideawhatisignedupfor and #helppls, hinting that he may be in for a rude awakening about what sailing the seas actually entails.

One Piece in Live Action on Netflix

Netflix has set a 2023 release for its much-anticipated live-action One Piece series, although a specific date is yet to be announced. While the streamer does not have a high success rate with anime adaptations, such as 2021’s swiftly cancelled Cowboy Bebop series, Netflix appears to be putting great effort into making sure One Piece bucks the trend. Matt Owens, the showrunner of the upcoming series, recently hyped up the iconic Arlong Park arc "Help me" scene as one moment he believes the live-action production really nailed, stating his excitement for fans to see the work he and the Netflix team have done with the beloved series.

The cast and crew have been active in promoting the series and paying homage to Eiichiro Oda’s original work, from Godoy’s recent post to Rudd’s Instagram AMA. A particular response to one fan’s question about Luffy’s live-action footwear went viral on Twitter, as Rudd quelled concern about the future pirate king appearing in a promotional Netflix poster with shoes rather than his famous sandals. Rudd stated that she and her costars did as much of their own stunt work as possible, and that the move to closed-toed footwear was made as a safety precaution to ensure Godoy could jump around like the rubber boy he is without serious risk of injury.

Although Netflix recently removed Seasons 1-4 of the One Piece anime from its platform, later seasons of the series are still available to stream as fans wait for the live-action adaptation to drop. Alternatively, all episodes can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
