For any new fan, the pure length and scope of One Piece appear daunting. However, the read and watch are worth it to catch one of the most detailed and spectacular stories in all of Shounen. The formation of the Straw Hat pirates, the battles against kings and warlord alike, and the deep conspiracies that unfold have all contributed to a unique and consistently rewarding experience for continued watching.

The sheer amount of content can bog you down, though, especially when you have to put up with filler episodes. As such, this list will be running down some of the most skippable fillers as well as the few that should always be viewed.

10 Wasted Time: The Screaming Speed Serve! Pirate Dodgeball!

The Long Ring Island Arc has already baffled fans with its kind-of-canon elements in the manga. For a series beloved for the incredible history of its islands and the pivotal exchanges with world-class villains, it seemed incredibly distracting that it would voluntarily take a break to play games with a creepy old man.

What made it worse for anime watchers is the fact that Toei Animation took it upon themselves to add more episodes, literally having Luffy keep nonsensically betting the lives of his crew. This episode was the final straw for many who thought the story was reaching its end with the Silver Fox only to find him, unfortunately, setting up dodgeballs.

9 Loved: A Heartbreaking Duel - Luffy vs. Sanji - Part 1

Flashback arcs have infamously tested the patience of lifelong fans. While a series can plan for people to lose track of certain parts, it's downright patronizing for the studios to just reanimate old scenes from the series, shot for shot. It's even worse when they don't even do that and just show grainy footage from the early series.

That wasn't the case with first part of Luffy and Sanji's duel. This episode and its successor had major build from Toei Animation as one of the biggest betrayals in Japanese history. This episode was dedicated to reminding fans of the history and stakes behind that betrayal. They somehow made old tears feel fresh.

8 Wasted Time: The Ocean's Dream Arc

Ocean's Dream Arc in One Piece

This arc was somehow worse than any plain, ol' flashback arc. Instead of showing fans clips of previous episodes, it directly draws attention to several key characters from the Straw Hats' past... because a mysterious seahorse is stealing the memories of the Straw Hats?

The arc switches between light explorations of different characters' pasts as well and a whole amnesiac schtick that's clearly ripped off from sitcoms. Nothing is added to the story, and no one certainly learned anything new about the main characters.

7 Loved: Inherited Recipe! Sanji The Curry Iron Chef

Constantly proving that he isn't just the rival to Zoro, Sanji has had plenty of interesting filler arcs to really help his character flourish as well as justify his status as an elite cook. When the Straw Hats draw a little too near to a Marine ship, Sanji climbs aboard to aid a struggling, trainee cook.

Showing both his culinary skills and propensity to never waste food, Sanji sheds delightful wisdom on this up-and-coming cook, gives good food to some Marine elites, and gives fans plenty of ideas for home-cooking.

6 Wasted Time: The Goat Island Arc

A lot of auxiliary content for One Piece focuses on the Straw Hats potentially getting treasure but inevitably never getting treasure. The Goat Island Arc is one of the worst instances of this. While on the run from the Marines, the Straw Hats find themselves stranded on an island full of goats being taken care of by one old man.

The crew constantly finds themselves owing the old man and doing random chores for him, slowly unlocking his past as an infamous pirate who hid a bountiful treasure. After fighting Marines and searching the island, the Straw Hats eventually learn that the goats themselves had eaten the treasure long ago because no one actually gets richer in this show.

5 Loved: Brook's Hard Struggle - The Difficult Path Of Becoming A True Comrade?

Not a lot of the Straw Hats get episodes dedicated to them or, at least, not immediately after they have joined. Brook, though, needed a special circumstance to justify his place as the crew's musician, especially given the speeding rails the series would be put on once they hit Sabaody Archipelago.

Having just joined the crew, Brook struggles to find a role on the ship but only seems to get in the way of the Straw Hats' various day-to-day activities. With nothing else to do, Brook just solemnly plays a tune on the ship's deck, playing a very somber version of Binks' Sake and lulling several members of the crew to peace. It's not much, but it's a noble role.

4 Wasted Time: Noro Noro Menace - The Return of Foxy The Silver Fox

Toei listened when fans said that they were happy that Foxy was gone and decided to reward them with even more Foxy episodes. Because, really, why should they try so hard? Buggy was stuck being arrested and sent to Impel Down, so the Foxy Pirates took the role of cartoonish villains for a while, bringing trickery and antics when fans just wanted epic pirate battles.

In this episode, Foxy returned again in this short romp to both thwart the Straw Hats' stay at a luxury resort as well as attempt to steal a hidden jewel. Will he do it? Probably not, but the animators needed more content.

3 Loved: The Warship Island Arc

The Warship Island Arc was a great showing for what a One Piece filler arc could accomplish and would even find elements of itself becoming canon in the series, such as Luffy's curious ability to understand mythical creatures. After Arlong's defeat and as the crew drew near to the Red Line, the Straw Hats came across a mysterious girl, Apis, with the strange ability to understand a race of dragons, the Sennennryu.

The Straw Hats help Apis return one of the dragons to its home but soon find that a rogue Marine troop is also on the pursuit, wanting the dragon for its healing properties. With magical elements on a grander scale and some cool fights to go with it, the Warship Island Arc deservedly stands alongside the rest of One Piece.

2 Wasted Time: The Caesar Retrieval Arc

If there's anything that fans didn't want after the slow pace of the Punk Hazard Arc, it was episodes dedicated to protecting Caesar. While the Straw Hats and Trafalgar Law were formulating their plan against Donquixote Doflamingo, they would find Caesar mysteriously kidnapped by a third party.

That third party was the nefarious Captain Breed who has used the powers of his Pet Pet Fruit to enslave a group of Kung-Fu Dugongs (Remember them?). He would soon use that same ability to force Luffy and Law into what should've been a dream battle of two of the Worst Generation but just ended up being a disappointing collection of punches and blocks. Too long for its own good and not long enough to create any emotional investment, it's easy for any fan to think that they should've just left Caesar.

1 Loved: The G-8 Arc

The G-8 Arc was everything both an exciting pirate adventure and a well-written anime arc should be. As soon as the Straw Hats landed their ship after leaving Skypeia, they found themselves, unfortunately, landing at a Marine base.

Having to use their wits to avoid the surrounding forces, the arc showed the Straw Hats infiltrating the base, being captured by the Marines, and posing as elite officers. They also faced off against the charming and tactical threat of Captain Jonathan, a Marine so memorable that fans thought he was (and would later want him as) a canon character.
