One Piece Film: Red revealed new costumes for some of its supporting characters.
The upcoming anime movie previously revealed new looks for Luffy, Zoro, Nami and the other Straw Hat Pirates that match the film's musically-focused setting and themes, and now several reoccuring characters from the series have received updated outfits as well. Like some of the previously revealed new costumes, some of the characters get a more casual, vacation-inspired look, such as Trafalgar Law, who trades in his usual costume for an open shirt and a pair of shorts, while other characters, such as the Barto Club's Bartolomeo, get more elaborate, punk rock-infused costumes.
One Piece Film: Red sees the Straw Hat Pirates traveling to a new island in order to attend a music festival. The movie will feature the series' newest character, Uta, a young singer who is the estranged daughter of Red-Haired Shanks, the powerful captain who originally gave Luffy his iconic straw hat and inspired the young boy to pursue the life of a pirate. The new character was designed by series creator Eiichiro Oda, who previously stated the movie was born out of his desire to add a new female character to the series' cast. "I am tired of drawing legendary old grandpas in movies," Oda joked when the movie was first announced.
The script for the new movie is being penned by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who previously wrote One Piece Film: Gold, and is being directed by Code Geass' Goro Taniguchi. Taniguchi previously worked on the franchise on the 1998 animated short One Piece: Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack!, which preceeded the premiere of the anime series. The series' usual voice cast, including Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy, will all reprise their roles for the film. Like previous One Piece movies, Oda is serving as the producer for the new theatrical feature, which is being animated by Toei Animation.
In addition to working on the movie, Toei Animation recently resumed the broadcast of new episodes for the One Piece TV anime. The show was placed on hiatus for over six weeks after the studio was hit with a targeted ransomware attack that forced the company to take its internal network and private servers offline.
One Piece Film: Red will premiere in Japan on Aug. 6. Details about the film'sn release outside of Japan have yet to be announced. New episodes of the One Piece TV anime are available for streaming from Crunchyroll, while select seasons of the show and several of the series' theatrical releases are now streaming on Netflix.
