The Gomu Gomu no is kind of a mystery. It started out a subpar devil fruit, but it developed slowly yet spectacularly. Yes, at first we were suspecting whether rubber could carry Luffy to the top of the pirate world. But then came gear 2nd, gear 3rd and finally gear 4th. And we never felt so wrong.

However, as amazing as a devil fruit the Gomu Gomu no mi is, we have to admit that it's kind of late bloomer. If Luffy invested all the effort he put in the Gomu Gomu no mi in lets say a more competent devil fruit, then he could’ve been closer to the pirate king title by now. Here are 5 devil fruits that could make Luffy stronger, and 5 that would only drag him down.

10 Benefit: Mochi Mochi no mi

Mochi Mochi no Mi

Mochi Mochi no mi is katakuri's signature fruit. It's a paramecia type devil fruit that turns its user into a Mochi man. This devil fruit is very similar to Luffy's devil fruit, Gomu Gomu no mi, except that it's superior in every aspect. We have seen Katakuri utilize it in a way that makes the Gomu Gomu no mi look like a second-hand product.

9 Drag: Bara Bara no mi

The Bara Bara no mi is a paramecia type devil fruit that grants its user slash damage immunity, turning them into a nemesis to all swordsmen. Naturally, that immunity can be bypassed through armament haki.

The Bara Bara no mi was one of the first devil fruits to be introduced in the series. When it was showcased early on, its performance was even worse than the pre-time skip Gomu Gomu no mi. Luffy is definitely better off without it.

8 Benefit: Hito Hito no mi, Model: Daibutsu

Hito Hito no mi, Model: Daibutsu is one of the most underestimated devil fruits in One piece. This devil fruit is a mythical Zoan, which means it's rarer and more valuable than a typical Logia type devil fruit.

This fruit allows its user to transform into a giant golden Buddha, which is almost as badass as Netero's 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva. While transformed, the user gains immense strength and endurance, a perfect suit for Luffy's fighting style.

7 Drag: Hito Hito no mi

Not to be confused with the overpowered Hito Hito no mi, model: Daibutsu, the Hito Hito no mi is a zoan type devil fruit. When it comes to usefulness in battle, this fruit scores a zero. And when it comes to overall value, this fruit also earns a big zero, at least in case of a human user.

The Hito Hito no mi could only show obvious effects on animals and inanimate objects. If Luffy ate it, he would gain a swimming disability and nothing else.

6 Benefit: Kira Kira no mi

Kira Kira no mi, or diamond diamond fruit, is a paramecia devil fruit that grants its user the ability to coat themselves in diamond. This fruit excels in both offense and defense. Even in the world of One piece, diamond is counted as one of the toughest substances, with very few being capable of breaking it with sheer force. If Luffy ate this devil fruit, then he would've been virtually unbeatable throughout the pre-time skip.

5 Drag: Buki Buki no mi

Buki Buki no mi is a paramecia devil fruit eaten by Baby 5. After eating the fruit, Baby 5 became capable of transforming a part of, or her entire body into a weapon.

As we have previously seen, Luffy has zero proficiency in using any weapon, not guns and definitely not swords. If he somehow acquired this devil fruit, then he would only be using his gun fists to punch people.

4 Benefit: Magu Magu no mi

akainu using magma fruit in one piece

Magu Magu no mi, or magma magma fruit is a Logia type devil fruit. This fruit, true to its name, turns its eater into a magma human. The user of this fruit can freely produce, manipulate, or transform into magma. Even among the variety of Logia fruits that were introduced, this fruit is an absolute kick-ass. If this fruit was eaten by Luffy, then the pirate king title would’ve been as good as his.

3 Drag: Bane Bane no mi

The Bane Bane no mi falls in the paramecia category. This fruit also shares obvious similarities with the Gomu Gomu no mi, but unlike the Gomu Gomu no mi, its potential is limited.

The user of this fruit could turn their limbs into springs. Gaining enhanced agility, and the ability to stretch their limbs to some extent. A decent devil fruit, but below Luffy's standards.

2 Benefit: Gura Gura no mi

The Gura Gura no mi is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, paramecia devil fruit. The fruit grants its user the ability to create quakes, and we are talking large-scale quakes here. Due to its overwhelming effects, it was dubbed as the fruit that could potentially destroy the world. Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate climbed to the top of the world, relying on this fruit. If any fruit is worthy of the future pirate king, then it's definitely this one.

1 Drag: Jake Jake no mi

The world of One piece features a vast collection of devil fruits. Some are awesome and are worth competing for. Others are just the result of Oda's bad humor. The Jake Jake no mi falls on the latter category, a devil fruit with no practicality whatsoever.

The user of the fruit will gain the ability to transform into a wearable jacket. Some of you might be unaware of this, but jackets can't fight.
