One of the most appealing traits of the series One Piece is its comedic factor. Within the intense pirate battles, marine shenanigans, traumatic childhoods and beautifully crafted adventures are the hilarious antics of the Straw Hats. From the very first introduction of Monkey D. Luffy as he emerged from a barrel, his Devil Fruit powers and carefree personality set up the foundation for a story of jokes and fun, which was enhanced with every new addition that joined the Straw Hat pirate crew.
However, should there be a title of King when it comes to comedy on the Straw Hat crew, there would be a ferocious fight to claim it. It would be a challenging claim for one to say that there is a single member who is not absolutely hilarious in their own right. Some of the crew specialize in natural comedic presence, some are the serious and reserved straight men who suffer at the hands of their more jovial crew mates and their reactions are what make them humorous, and some are outright focused on being as funny as possible. However, the title of King of Comedy can only belong to one.
A Crew of Pirate Comedians
While there are certainly some shining stars when it comes to humor, others should certainly not be forgotten. Roronoa Zoro is quite the serious character overall, yet he has made the crew laugh a good few times with his terrible sense of direction and overly aggressive actions against a certain seahorse. Sanji Vinsmoke’s obsessive and over-the-top reactions when his heart finds 'love' are nearly always as ridiculous as the amount of blood he loses, and Nico Robin’s eerie and terrifying thought process can make even the stronger-willed members of the crew crack a smile and has been the victim of Usopp’s impressionist skills.
Each member has their moments, but four in particular have more than the rest: Luffy, Usopp, Franky and Brook. The impression skills of the two former members are known to bring laughs upon the deck of the Thousand Sunny, and Luffy in particular shares a lack of self-awareness of Franky that makes them instinctively funny. Franky’s very persona, especially before the time skip, made him one of the funniest characters in the entire series. Chopper’s tormenting of him during his clash with the CP9’s Fukurou showed just how fun Franky can be. However, the ninth member of the crew takes the heights of comedy to a whole new level, not only for the entertainment of the crew but also for fans of the series.
One Piece's King of Comedy Is "Soul King" Brook
The Soul King needs room on his afro for a second crown. The list of his exploits as a comedic genius stretch from the moment he was introduced to the current place of the series. Brook has it all: a string of self-deprecating jokes about his life as a living skeleton, the precise timing to lighten the mood by requesting the look upon panties -- one of the best interactions between him and Big Mom -- the slapstick comedy of farts, burps and 45-degree angles, and being the perpetrator of one of the funniest scenes in the entire series; the moment he awkwardly waddled over to smash the portrait of Mother Carmel while wearing a poorly-designed Luffy Mask.
Considering the character's profession, it makes sense that Brook would be the funniest member of the crew. Brook is a musician and entertainer, focused on ensuring that those around him are happy, fulfilled and enjoying their life upon the sea. One important factor of this is to make his crew mates laugh. Nami may not find his antics as humorous as others due to being the recipient of his panties request more often than not, but her reactions to his foolishness are half the fun of him asking. Laughter is the lifeblood of the Straw Hats, and there is no laughter funnier and more iconic than "Yohohohoho!"
