Fans hate some characters in One Piece for various reasons, including their personalities, the actions (or lack of action) they made when they were first introduced, or a combination of both.

However, some fans excessively hate these characters without considering their further development. From Nami being hated for her hot temper despite mellowing out later on, to Alvida being the first enemy defeated and then consuming a Devil Fruit and rising in the ranks of power. Some characters have garnered undeserved hate for their initial appearances or perceived uselessness despite proving otherwise.

10 Kaya Was Hated For Being Unaware Of Kuro Being A Pirate All Along

Some fans were incensed that Kaya first believed Kuro's lies, especially when she rejected Usopp after he tried warning her about the pirate Kuro. However, it is important to note that by the time Kuro tried to kill her, he had already masqueraded as the kindly butler Khladahore for three years and would already earn her trust by then.

Kaya would be less likely to trust Kuro and believe Usopp about Kuro's identity if she had not been with Kuro for so long already. She was quick to believe Usopp about Kuro after Kuro revealed his true colors.

9 Nami Sometimes Is Hated For Her Temper

One Piece Nami

Even though Nami has a short temper at times, especially during the early arcs when she first joined Luffy as one of the Straw Hats, she did mellow out later on as she bonded with him and the rest of the crew.

Her additional smarts also made up for some of Luffy's shortsighted flaws, and her skills in being a thief and expert navigator were hugely helpful for sailing across the seas and approaching new destinations. It also helped that Nami became a potential romantic interest for Luffy, even though romance is not a huge plot point.

8 Boa's Love For Luffy Made Her Despised By Some Fans

Boa Hancock From One Piece

Boa Hancock was hated by some fans thanks to her initial sadism and cruelty towards Luffy and his companions. This got worse after she fell for Luffy romantically, especially since fans preferred Luffy to end up with Nami rather than Boa.

However, others sympathized with Boa after her tragic backstory was eventually revealed, explaining her origins and her initial distrust of men. Since the reveal, the fans at least understood where her previous viewpoints came from thanks to that backstory, even if they still did not like her very much.

7 Koby Gets Some Hate For Being Extremely Squeamish In His Introduction

Luffy and Koby from One Piece

Though Koby was one of the first characters ever introduced in One Piece, some of his detractors argued that he was too spineless to be enjoyable. However, Koby did grow during his brief time in the series, including standing up to Alvida in the first episode with Luffy's encouragement, joining the Marines, and rising in the ranks to be a great contributor and member.

Even though his appearances are brief compared to other minor characters, and some fans would prefer his type of character to be in a different anime instead, Koby did grow over time and learned to stand up for himself.

6 Usopp Was Hated For Having Normal Strength

Usopp and his slingshot, Kuro Kabuto, in One Piece.

Though there are many superpowered characters, Usopp is one of the few characters with the strength of an average person. Usopp was very aware of this and used his wits and strategies to outdo his opponents rather than rely on power to win the battle. Despite this usage of wits, some fans still felt that he was the odd one out compared to the rest of the Straw Hats and that he should not have joined them in the first place.

However, if it was not for Usopp's smarts, Kaya likely would die at Kuro's hands if Usopp did not try to warn her and also defend the rest of Syrup Island from Kuro and his pirate crew.

5 Kuina Earned Hate For Initially Being Mean To Zoro

Though Kuina rarely appeared in the anime, since she had already died before the current events thanks to a tragic accident, she was hated by some fans for being mean and condescending to Zoro. However, it was revealed during those same flashbacks that Kuina would be unable to become the greatest swordsman in the world or even inherit her family's dojo despite her talent since she was born a woman.

Additionally, Kuina did warm up to Zoro over time and made the vow to become the strongest swordsman in the world before her sudden demise. Her eventual close bond with Zoro helped drive his initial development and motivation.

4 Sanji Was Hated For His Flirtatious Nature And Being One Of The Weakest Straw Hats

Sanji On Whole Cake Island

Sanji got some hate from viewers thanks to constantly flirting with women and also being one of the weakest Straw Hats. However after his family's past was revealed, he earned some sympathy from fans considering how tragic it was, including the circumstances behind his mother's death.

Additionally, he used his chivalrous nature to prevent his death at Pudding's hands by complimenting her third eye during their wedding ceremony in the Whole Cake Island Arc. While Sanji might be one of the weakest Straw Hats, his skills in battle and as a chef are more than competent.

3 Marshall D. Teach Being Revealed As Blackbeard Had Mixed Reception

Though some fans were surprised and awed by Marshall D. Teach being Blackbeard all along, others were upset by this revelation and wished that he stayed good. However, despite the split reception on the twist, Teach proved himself as one of the most intimidating and powerful enemies Luffy and his crew ever faced.

His status of being one of the Four Emperors and having the power of two Devil Fruits also helped ease fans into him being evil all along, as well as later evil actions he committed along the way.

2 Alvida Is Mocked For Being Initially Defeated By Luffy, But She Got Stronger Later On

Alvida from One Piece

Even though Alvida was easily defeated in her first appearance, she became much stronger in her later appearances. Though this newfound strength is partially attributed to her eating a Devil Fruit, she also worked to get stronger and even ended up being the active captain of her and Buggy's alliance crew.

Alvida also later became part of the organization known as Buggy's Delivery. Even though she might not be as powerful as one of the Four Emperors, she still steadily rose in the ranks to become a more respected and powerful pirate.

1 Trafalgar D. Water Law Had Some Detractors For Being Less Active In Battle Compared To Others

Trafalgar Law Surgeon of Death One Piece

Though Trafalgar came off as one of the least helpful pirates in the thick of battle, other fans argued that it made sense. This is because his abilities were better used for medical help than actually participating in combat. Additionally, if Trafalgar went down in battle while others needed help, they would lack the availability of getting medical assistance quickly.

Viewers quickly sympathized with him after his tragic backstory was revealed, including him losing his family and home to disease and extermination.
