Though the Marvel landscape was once absolutely polluted with mutants of substantial to Omega-level abilities, with Jonathan Hickman’s new run surrounding the iconic team, fans have received an officially updated (albeit significantly shorter) list of mutants who qualify as “Omega-level” or beyond.

Officially defined as a mutant whose dominant power “is deemed to register, or reach, an undefinable upper level of that power’s specific classification,” theses mutants are some of the most immeasurably powerful beings to be born into the Marvel universe or multiverse, not to mention to most powerful beings born on Earth. Vulcan, one of the seemingly cursed Summers brothers is no exemption to this definition.

10 He’s Cyclops’ Brother

In the Marvel landscape, there are very few families that have as complicated a history as the Summers family. Christopher and Katherine Summers would unwittingly birth some of the most powerful mutants in the world before (and after) their untimely capture by the Shi’ar Empire. Though Katherine had managed to save Scott and Alex (later Cyclops and Havok) by pushing them out of their plane as they were attacked. Unbeknownst to both Christopher and Katherine, she was pregnant with their third son, Gabriel Summers, otherwise known as Vulcan.

After their capture by the Shi’ar Empire and Emperor D’Ken, Christopher and Katherine were very quickly separated as Katherine was sent to become a member of D’Ken’s harem. However, after an attempted escape, D’Ken would force a helpless Christoper to watch as the emperor killed his wife in front of him before sending him to work in the mine pits for the rest of his life.

Unknown to Christopher, however, D’ken would take their unborn child from his wife’s corpse before incubating him in an aging chamber and selling him into slavery.

8 A Slave To The Shi’ar Empire

After being aged to adolescence, the young Summers child would be sent back to Earth in order to serve Davan Shakari, the emperor’s hand on Earth. Though the young boy had essentially grown up a slave to the Shi’ar Empire, it wouldn’t be long before he would escape from the captivity of Davan and make his way out into the world, experiencing Earth for the very first time. However, while Gabriel had managed to escape, he was still on an unfamiliar planet with no idea what to do, where to go, or even who he really was.

7 Moira Mactaggert Saved Him From The Streets

It is in this state that Moira MacTaggert would find the boy with little memory of who he was or even where he came from. Moira would take Gabriel on as her ward and begin training him in how to use his abilities.

After some training with Moira, and taking on the names Gabriel (after the archangel) and Vulcan (from Roman mythology), it was decided that the budding mutant might be much better off under the supervision of someone more capable of training him. Someone like Professor Charles Xavier.

6 He Fought Krakoa To Save The Original X-Men (Including His Brother)

Fortunately for Xavier, Gabriel reached his care just as he had found himself fresh out of young X-Men. Unfortunately for Gabriel, however, Xavier had lost his previous team of X-Men after sending them to the sentient island known as Krakoa. While Xavier was uncertain of what had happened to the original team of X-Men, he knew that he needed to assemble a new team in order to figure it out-- and hopefully, retrieve them. Professor Xavier’s little fetch quest would prove much more dangerous than any of the new X-Men could have possibly imagined.

5 Died” Fighting Krakoa

With a new mission and new teammates (including Petra, Darwin, and Sway), Gabriel and the new X-Men would make their way towards Krakoa in hopes of saving the original X-Men.

While the new X-Men were able to save Scott Summers, the rest of the mission would not go so well. After informing Scott of their relation and sending him away on the jet, Scott would watch in terror as the island struck down his brother and the rest of his team.

4 He Merged With Darwin

After the island attacked, Sway was the first to lose her life. After being struck by the island, her body split in two, Sway would release some of her power and slow down time for the remaining members of her team. Petra would be the next to die after being incinerated as she used her ability, for the last time, to bring both Gabriel and Darwin through the surface of the ground into a cave that she had created. It is here, as they both lay dying, that Darwin converts his form into pure energy and merges with Gabriel, saving them both.

3 He Broke Cerebro And Shut Down Emma Frost

After returning to Professor Xavier, a hysterical Scott has his mind wiped of the memory of both Vulcan and his team. While these memories are lost to Scott, Xavier does send him back along with Storm and another new team to save the original team that had been lost. After they are saved, Jean Grey sends Krakoa hurtling through space with Vulcan and Darwin along with it. However, after the events of M-Day, Emma Frost discovers his energy while searching for the missing Xavier and is immediately overwhelmed resulting in a broken Cerebro along with Emma Frost. Being that she was considered an Omega-level telepath at the time, the is doubly impressive.

2 Beyond Omega Level

In the world of Marvel, it is very hard, almost impossible to overpower an Omega-level mutant of any type. However, after his revival and subsequent trip back down to Earth for revenge against Xavier for what had happened to his team, Gabriel seemingly can’t help but drop a couple of (then) Omega-level mutants. First, as he awakens, Gabriel overpowers Emma Frost well before even reaching Earth. After his return to Earth, Gabriel is able to shut down the synapses of Rachel Summers (who was considered to be an Omega-level mutant at the time).

1 Emperor Vulcan

After bringing his anger to the X-Men and Professor Xavier, Vulcan would eventually reach an understanding with the Professor and leave the X-Men in relative peace. However, though his time antagonizing the X-Men was coming to an end, with his newly-regained memories, Gabriel would set his sights on the Shi’ar Empire. With his return, the Shi’ar Empire would be split into two factions. One that chose to fight against Vulcan. And another that chose to not die by his hand. His leadership would bring the Shi’ar into many fights, including a war with the Kree Empire, which at the time found itself under the leadership of Black Bolt of the Inhumans.
