Oliver Platt Signs On For X-Men: First Class

On the heels of this weekend's announcements involving Jason Flemyng and Rose Byrne comes word from Deadline that Oliver Platt has joined the sprawling cast of X-Men: First Class.

The Emmy-nominated actor, who stars with Laura Linney in the new Showtime series The Big C, will play a non-mutant character called The Man in Black.

Director Matthew Vaughn's reboot of the Fox franchise centers on the early friendship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, who work with other mutants to stop a global threat. In the process, a riff between them opens, beginning the war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

The film, which begins production later this month in London, stars James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, Kevin Bacon as an unnamed villain, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique; Nicholas Hoult as Henry McCoy/Beast, Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy/Banshee, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Lucas Till as Alex Summers, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Jason Flemyng as Azazel and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart.

X-Men: First Class opens on June 3, 2011.
