The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame was released on December 7, 2018, and we're sure that, much like us here at CBR, you've watched it more times than you care to count. Unsurprisingly, for as many questions the trailer answered it left at least twice as many questions burning. And as long as there are unknowns, mysteries, and some clues scattered here and there, fans are bound to make up all kinds of theories. Due to previous set photos of actors wearing the costumes from Avengers, the fact that Steve Rogers is wearing the Stealth Uniform from Captain America: The Winter Soldier in the trailer for Avengers: Endgame, the peculiar video of Scott Lang that has been put under strict scrutiny of the most devoted MCU fans, and the fact that there's a stone that can literally alter the flow of time, theories have emerged about time travel playing a crucial role in Avengers: Endgame.

The possibility of going back in time and essentially re-visiting some of the preceding MCU movies got us thinking about all the various costumes our heroes have sported over the course of ten years, which could be coming back just like Cap's Stealth Uniform from Winter Soldier. However, while we certainly love seeing Steve's Winter Soldier costume, there are some superhero outfits we'd rather stay buried. Thus, we went back in time and compiled a list of 10 old MCU costumes we'd like to see in Avengers: Endgame and another 10 we definitely would not.

20 WANT: BLACK WIDOW (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER)

Black Widow Captain America Winter Soldier

Black Widow’s comic book costume looks simple enough, however, creating an actual functional costume is a different beast altogether. Sometimes the simple designs just don’t translate. Fortunately, that hasn’t been the case with Black Widow.

While most of her costumes were rather great, the one she wore in Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes the cake. It’s sleek and stealthy, reminiscent of the character's comic book costume, and looks great on-screen. Because the suit is so simple in design, Natasha’s signature gauntlets and the belt buckle really stand out. Here's hoping we get to see this outfit again.

19 DON’T WANT: BLACK WIDOW (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

Black Widow Avengers Age of Ultron

If there’s one Black Widow costume that didn’t quite live up to expectations it has to be the costume from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, we’re not saying that this costume is the absolute worst thing that’s ever been put on the big screen -- far from it. However, the Avengers: Age of Ultron pales in comparison to Natasha's other MCU costumes.

Apparently, after sticking strictly to black, gray and minor traces of red, the designers wanted to add some color to Black Widow’s suit. Unfortunately, the costume didn't benefit from the change. The red on her wrists doesn't blend well with the glowing neon blue lines. Aside from not being quite aesthetic, the suit also lost the stealthy look.

18 WANT: CAPTAIN AMERICA (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER)

Captain America Captain America The First Avenger

Captain America has had some pretty interesting costumes in his long MCU history. His latest costume in Avengers: Infinity War seemed to draw inspiration from his other comic book alter-ego, Nomad. The navy-blue suit without the trademark star-spangled pattern is a far cry from Cap’s costume we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Yes, there’s the USO costume as well, but we’re talking about the suit Howard Stark designed for Steve. It’s such a great costume, easily among the best in the MCU, and we’d love to see it in Avengers: Endgame. Alternatively, the Ad-Hoc Rescue Uniform will do as well.

17 DON’T WANT: QUICKSILVER (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

Quicksilver Avengers Age of Ultron

Poor Quicksilver didn’t get to hang with the Avengers for a very long time. In fact, the silver-haired hero had only one appearance, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he passed away as a true hero during the Battle of Sokovia. The fans have theorized about how Marvel will bring Pietro Maximoff back for quite some time. One theory is that Avengers: Endgame will be the movie to finally do it.

While we sure would love to see Quicksilver back amongst the living, we do have a request to make: please, give him a new costume. The Avengers: Age of Ultron outfit was quite disappointing.

16 WANT: CAPTAIN AMERICA (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

Captain America Avengers Age of Ultron

On the other hand, Captain America’s costume from Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of Steve’s best looks. In Age of Ultron, Steve is sporting a brand-new suit, courtesy of Tony Stark. Naturally, the suit came with some tech upgrades, such as the electromagnetic shield which enables Steve to call it back.

Appearance-wise, it’s a combination of the Stealth Uniform and the modern practical suit. The colors are just the right shade, the flag iconography is easily recognizable, and everything blends well. It's one of Steve Rogers' best looks in the MCU and it would sure be awesome to see it again.

15 DON’T WANT: FALCON (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER)

Falcon Captain America The Winter Soldier

Falcon is one of those characters who underwent some serious changes on the big screen. Not only does he look nothing like his comic book counterpart, but the MCU Falcon also has a completely different origin story. Though, that’s probably for the best, since it’s hard to tell how general audiences would react to a guy who gets brainwashed and gains the ability to talk to birds.

And when it comes to Falcon’s comic book costume, it was probably deemed a bit too colorful for the movies. So, when he first appeared in the MCU, Falcon wore a boring gray military uniform that bore zero resemblance to his classic comic book look.

14 WANT: BLACK WIDOW (IRON MAN 2)

Black Widow Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2 introduced us to one of the core members of the Avengers, Black Widow. Director Fury sent Natasha to infiltrate Stark industries in order to keep an eye on Tony Stark and assess whether he was Avengers-material. When she finally revealed herself to Tony Stark, Natasha was wearing her S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform.

This was Black Widow’s first MCU costume and it’s one of her best looks. It’s a simple, form-fitting, all-black outfit with two gray lines running down her front. The costume also comes equipped with a utility belt and gauntlets. It’s comic book-accurate and it looks great on screen.

13 DON’T WANT: HAWKEYE (AVENGERS)

Hawkeye Avengers

Hawkeye has the most disliked costume of all the Avengers, and that includes almost all of the costumes he’s worn thus far. We got our first good look at Clint Barton in Avengers where he sported his S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform. The sleeveless costume tried to incorporate some color, though not quite Hawkeye’s trademark purple.

To be perfectly clear, Hawkeye’s costume wasn’t horrible -- it was just boring. Perhaps if the designers included his logo on the chest, like it’s done in the comics, this outfit could have looked much more interesting. Luckily, Clint is making some big changes in Avengers: Endgame.

12 WANT: STAR-LORD (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY)

Star-Lord Guardians of the Galaxy

Star-Lord’s costume looks nothing like it’s supposed to if we’re comparing it to the original comics. But, in the case of legendary outlaw Peter Quill, this isn’t a bad thing. On the contrary, the Marvel Cinematic Universe iteration of the character is far superior to his comic book counterpart in many regards -- including the costume.

The two costumes we’ve seen Star-Lord wear in the MCU are rather similar. The jacket is a bit different in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War and we just happen to prefer the one from the first Guardians film. It has a more relaxed rock star feel, unlike the new one which more resembles a uniform.

11 DON’T WANT: THE NOVA CORPS (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY)

The Nova Corps Guardians of the Galaxy

According to Thor, Thanos decimated Xandar to obtain the Power Stone, so the Nova Corps is no more. However, as we all know, there are ways this could be undone in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. The Nova Corps could still play an important role against Thanos.

We just hope that if Marvel decides to bring them back, they will improve their costumes. The Nova Corps uniforms we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy were simply not good enough. The chest plates are fine, but that’s about the only thing that works. The helmets are the worst part though and really need to change.

10 WANT: SCARLET WITCH (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

At the very end of Avengers: Age of Ultron we caught a brief glimpse of Wanda Maximoff’s new costume. After spending the entire movie in regular clothes, Wanda donned an actual superhero suit when she was recruited as a permanent member of the Avengers. However, the next time we saw Scarlet Witch in Captain America: Civil War, she was once again wearing what looked like regular clothes.

The reason behind this is that the Russos thought it was too early for Wanda to suit up because she was still finding herself. Well, given everything she’s been through, we’d say she’s ready now. So, if Wanda does return in Endgame we’re hoping to see her in an actual superhero costume once again.

9 DON’T WANT: SCARLET WITCH (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

Scarlet Witch Avengers Age of Ultron

Scarlet Witch is in desperate need of a costume change. Ever since her MCU debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda Maximoff has had a horrible track record when it comes to costumes. In Age of Ultron, actress Elizabeth Olsen wore a regular black and red outfit that shouldn’t even be considered a superhero costume.

It’s not a bad look per se, but it’s nothing noteworthy either. It’s forgettable. An improvement on the entirely too revealing leotard the character is known to wear in the comics for sure, but lacking personality. The MCU should really do something about Scarlet Witch’s costume and the sooner the better.

8 WANT: THOR (THOR: RAGNAROK)

Thor Ragnarok

All hail Taika Waititi, the savior of Thor. Not only did Waititi make the best Thor movie in the franchise, but he also turned Thor into a vastly more interesting character, and he gave the God of Thunder his coolest costume to date. Shredding the royalty-like attire he’d been wearing up until Ragnarok, Thor jumped into a gladiator armor.

The costume Thor wore in Ragnarok had a simple enough design with brown as the main color. The huge cape from the previous costumes was replaced by a short half-cape and the whole outfit was decorated by a single teal plate. The result is one of the most memorable and aesthetic costumes in the MCU.

7 DON’T WANT: THOR (PRE-RAGNAROK)

THOR

All of Thor’s costumes up until Thor: Ragnarok looked pretty similar, and they were all solid iterations of Thor’s comic book costumes. Much like Hawkeye, Thor seems to have difficulty deciding whether to wear long sleeves or not. The difference is, Thor’s costumes look pretty amazing either way.

Most fans would agree that Thor’s costumes are some of the best designs in the MCU. Still, many would also agree that the costume from Thor: Ragnarok was a game-changer. The much simpler and less bulky armor is a much better look for the God of Thunder, which is why we can’t imagine going back to Thor’s outfits prior to Ragnarok. The Infinity War costume mixes the best of both for a dashing look.

6 WANT: IRON MAN (IRON MAN 2)

Iron Man MK V Iron Man 2

The first Iron Man armor designed with portability and ease of access in mind, the Iron Man MK V may well be the coolest Iron Man armor ever to appear in the MCU. The so-called "Football" looks like your average suitcase, but this suitcase transforms into an Iron Man armor. It appeared in Iron Man 2 when Whiplash attacked Tony during the Circuit de Monaco.

Tony and Happy threw the Football to Stark and we witnessed one of the coolest suit-up scenes ever. Aside from awesome suit-up properties, the suit also looks gorgeous. The red and silver are well balanced and it doesn’t seem bulky in the slightest.

5 DON’T WANT: IRON MAN (IRON MAN 3)

Iron Man MK XLII Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 committed many sins. The whole Aldrich Killian and the Mandarin twist, Tony removing the shrapnel from his heart, and then here’s Tony destroying his armors and retiring (but not really because he's still Iron Man five years later). Still, the biggest sin of all has to be the ugly flashy gold armor. Call us crazy, but we prefer our Iron Man red.

The flashy gold is simply too flashy even for Tony Stark. Red has always been his color of preference, or so it seems at least. The upside is, Tony spent so little time in this armor that we all but forgot it even existed.

4 WANT: IRON MAN (CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR)

Over a decade of MCU movies, we’ve seen countless Iron Man armors. With each new model came a new look and some cool upgrades. In Captain America: Civil War, we got to see the first Iron Man armor with a collapsible helmet. The armor looked sleek but still retained the traditional armor appearance, unlike the Infinity War armor.

The Iron Man MK XLVI is mostly red with complementing gold plates, and it looks stunning. Aside from the collapsible helmet, this armor introduced multiple miniature arc reactors, as well as a more streamlined and form-fitting build. This armor is an example of Tony’s craftsmanship at its peak.

3 DON’T WANT: IRON MAN (SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING)

Iron Man MK 47 Spider-Man Homecoming

Unfortunately, the armor that succeeded the beloved MK XLVI didn’t get the stamp of approval from the fans. Featured in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the Iron Man MK XLVII had some cool new upgrades, but let’s not beat around the bush -- the thing looked awful. Much like the MK XLII from Iron Man 3, the Homecoming armor committed the sin of not being red enough.

The armor mixed red, gold and silver rather unsuccessfully. The large silver portion of the armor just doesn’t blend well with the gold plates on the shoulders and the helmet. It’s one of the worst-looking Iron Man armors in the MCU.

2 WANT: SPIDER-MAN (SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING)

Spider-Man Homecoming

In Avengers: Infinity War, Peter Parker donned an iconic costume, the live-action adaptation of the Iron Spider suit from the comics. The suit comes equipped with spider-arms and Tony Stark’s latest tech. However, while we can see all the advantages it offers, we still think the first Tech suit Tony gave Peter looks better.

Outfitted with a utility belt, Karen and all kinds of cool gizmos, Peter’s suit from Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the most comic book-accurate and stunning costumes in the MCU. This suit is the classic Spidey look and it’s impossible not to love it.

1 DON’T WANT: HAWKEYE (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

Hawkeye shoots his arrows as a robot comes up behind him in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Hawkeye’s struggle to choose between a long-sleeve or sleeveless costume culminated in Captain America: Civil War when he decided to mix and match. And honestly, thus far, that has been Hawkeye’s best look in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hawkeye sported a long-sleeve coat, which gave off a weird futuristic vibe. Mixing black and maroon once again, Hawkeye’s Age of Ultron costume was even worse than the one he wore in Avengers. The knee-long coat looks a bit ridiculous honestly. Not to mention that it doesn’t appear to be all that practical either. The worst part is, Hawkeye had some pretty great moments in Age of Ultron. Too bad he didn't dress for the occasion.
