More than two weeks after reports emerged that Fox was pursuing Inglourious Basterds co-star Michael Fassbender for its X-Men reboot, Heat Vision confirms the actor will play Magneto in X-Men: First Class.

Fassbender will join James McAvoy, who stars as a young Charles Xavier in the Matthew Vaughn-directed adaptation that centers on the relationship of the future adversaries as they discover their fledgling mutant abilities and work together to stop a global threat. Benjamin Walker reportedly has been cast as the Beast, but there's been no confirmation.

This will be Fassbender’s third comic-book adaptation, following 2006′s 300 and Jonah Hex, which opened last week.

Bryan Singer conceived the story and will produce First Class along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Singer initially was set to direct, but Fox’s eagerness to push the film into production led to a scheduling conflict with his Jack the Giant Killer. Jane Goldman, Vaughn’s collaborator on Kick-Ass and Stardust, reportedly is penning a new script for First Class. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who worked on Marvel’s Thor, previously rewrote the screenplay by Jamie Moss (Street Kings).

X-Men: First Class is set to open on June 3, 2011.
