The following contains spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi Part IV, now streaming on Disney+.

The fourth part of the hit Disney+ Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi set up a situation where the precocious little Leia Organa needs a rescue. However, Ben was left burned and beaten after facing off with Darth Vader in Part III. So, when we next see Ben after he’s healed, he’s changed his outfit to one that looks more like the Jedi robes of old.

When George Lucas first designed the look for Alec Guinness’s reclusive Jedi, he looked to the samurai. The big helmet and head-to-toe armor look was already taken by the bad guy. So, Ben’s robes were instead designed to resemble the kimono garment, favored by samurai but also common fashion for feudal-era Japan. Even though the Old Ben we meet in A New Hope is wearing basically a Jedi costume, that style of attire is not so specific as to be only a Jedi wardrobe. Yet, in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the wardrobe Ben wears is tied to where he is on his journey with his faith in the Force.

The Ben we meet in Part I is broken, and he's given up on anything that doesn’t involve watching over Luke Skywalker. He believes the boy is the Chosen One, not Anakin, so much so that at first he refuses to help Luke’s sister. In these first parts, Obi-Wan wears a blue tunic and cloak, very unlike anything we’ve seen him wear before. When he leaves the planet to find Leia, he trades that look in for a plain off-white tunic, brown pants and a short brown cloak, split in the middle. Again, these are perfectly plain traveling clothes that will help Ben blend in. Yet, while he is getting closer to the look of the Old Ben we know, it’s still not really a "Jedi" outfit.

After Indira Varma’s Tala and her pals on The Path, including O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Roken, help Kenobi heal, they give him some new duds. It makes sense that people who help Jedi escape would have some Jedi-style robes on hand. Obi-Wan’s new look in Part IV looks a bit more like the Master Kenobi we recognize from Star Wars. And it should. The wardrobe is certainly supposed to show that Ben is reconnecting with the Force and his Jedi skills. Yet, he’s still unbalanced. Instead of the bright, white robes he usually wears under his brown cloak, he’s wearing dark gray robes that don’t fit him all that well.

Still, we see a Kenobi that looks more like Obi-Wan than Ben in this episode, but he’s not all there. It takes him four swings to take out the first Stormtrooper and two to take out the second. When he and Leia get into the hallway, he seems to struggle to deflect all the blaster bolts. But, by the end, he’s deflecting them with ease. He even uses the Force to hold back the weight of an ocean, if only for a bit. His martial skills are coming back out of necessity, but he's still not fully present in the Force. Though, this is the first part in which he hasn’t called out to Qui-Gon for guidance. All these details, along with his wardrobe, suggest that Obi-Wan is traveling a different kind of path. He’s on the path back to being a Jedi Master.

Obi-Wan

One way that we can tell that Obi-Wan still remains unbalanced is that he doesn’t rely on the Force to find Leia. In fact, as we know from Star Wars Rebels, Jedi can sense the remains of their comrades. If Obi-Wan was fully in balance with the Force, he would have sensed the terrible trophies the Inquisitors keep. (Though, whether he’d know if they were dead or not remains a question.) Similarly, Kenobi blunders through the Fortress, constantly unsure of himself and calling out to Tala. In A New Hope, Old Ben is able to slip through the Death Star’s halls unnoticed and without violence. Whether Ben in Obi-Wan Kenobi lacks patience or has too much fear, he’s still some miles to go before he’s the Jedi we all know and love.

The costume change in Obi-Wan Kenobi Part IV might seem like a small thing, and it is from a certain point-of-view. Yet, all the details are meant to give the viewers some subtle clues about where their hero is on his journey. Hopefully by the end of the show, we will see Ben Kenobi in a very familiar wardrobe, signaling that he’s found the peace and balance he needs to later help Luke and Leia save the galaxy.

The final part of Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 1 premieres June 22, on Disney+.
