The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ was always going to be a one-off. First a feature film, the story was reimagined as a limited series. Yet, given the way this series has captured the zeitgeist, it makes sense that Disney+ wants to keep the party going. One story Lucasfilm could look at for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is giving the old Jedi Master a new Padawan learner.

Despite racist messages directed at Moses Ingram, her character in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Reva, is the most exciting new Star Wars villain in years. A new character, she has history with both the Jedi Order and the Lords of the Sith. She's a villain, but like Darth Maul it's not really her fault. She was forced into a life of fear and death without any hope of escape. In the final moments of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Reva made a choice to not do the evil thing. That's all redemption is in Star Wars, especially since most baddies die after they make that choice. With Reva, however, we get the rare opportunity to see what a dark side user might do to atone for the wrong she did. If she's going to do that, she needs a guide.

Vader runs Reva through in Obi-Wan Kenobi show

The wardrobe in Obi-Wan Kenobi detailed his path back to finding balance in the Force and being a Jedi again. He started in very un-Jedi clothes. Then he donned gray, ragged robes abandoned by another in his order. And by the end he wore bright white and brown, the outfit we've come to associate with Obi-Wan. He had to undertake this journey on his own, perhaps arguably getting help from young Leia. Reva does not have to go it alone, and if she's willing to learn from him, Obi-Wan would be duty bound to help her.

On Star Wars Rebels, the Padawan Ezra Bridger came to Tatooine to recruit old Ben to the Rebel Alliance. Before Old Ben defeated old Maul, he gave the Padawan a lesson that put him back on the path the Force set for him. Since this was after the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it seems that younger Ben would do the same for Reva. From Force lore to character moments where Ben helps Reva via their shared history with the Jedi and Vader, this is the story we need.

Alas, Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is possible but not for certain, according to Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy. The real question becomes, does Obi-Wan Kenobi need a Season 2? One thing Disney and Lucasfilm have in common is that both really like money. With Obi-Wan Kenobi being the most-watched show on Disney+, there's every incentive to deliver another season. If the streamer sees a subscriber bump that doesn't stick around, that's another data point in favor of, as Kylo Ren likes to shout, MORE. So, should there be a Season 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi at all?

If the plan is to have Ewan McGregor return with Hayden Christensen as Vader and have another battle, the answer is decidedly, "No." However, the show could tell a story that moves Reva along in her arc, which is good. Yet, it also needs to give Obi-Wan an emotional journey that "justifies" why he's such a confident teacher when he meets Luke in A New Hope. Given how his last Padawan turned out, the character could use a story that helps to heal that particular wound. If it's a near-impossible task, then it could also explain why he gave up on Vader in Return of the Jedi.

The Star Wars franchise has to be careful that in telling these fill-in-the-gap stories it doesn't rob the saga of all of its mystery. Doing a Season 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi just to do it is the wrong call. However, if they can build on the character work the first season did, then it might just be exactly what Star Wars fans want from these characters.

All the Obi-Wan Kenobi we have for now is currently streaming on Disney+.
