Director Deborah Chow compared Disney+'s upcoming Star Wars miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi to Logan and Joker.

During a press conference for Obi-Wan Kenobi attended by CBR and other media outlets, Chow revealed she wanted to use the series as a way of analyzing the titular Jedi Master. She likened her approach to Logan and Joker, with Chow stating that she was thrilled at the chance to dissect Obi-Wan's character. "I think I was the most excited about getting the opportunity to do a character-driven story," she explained. "You know, in a similar way, you know, obviously, it's a different tone, but something like Joker or Logan where, you know, you take one character out of a big franchise and then you really have the time and you go a lot deeper with the character. So, that to me seemed really exciting to get to do in Star Wars."

The show's focus on Obi-Wan was also the reason why showrunners passed on Darth Maul in favor of Darth Vader. While Maul shared a long history with Obi-Wan, Chow thought the return of his former Padawan Anakin Skywalker was already going to be a difficult trial for the Jedi Master. The director believed that involving both of the Sith at the same time "might be a little bit much."

Chow previously revealed how the filmmakers approached the series' story, with the director claiming Obi-Wan Kenobi was created with "a beginning, middle and end." Though she didn't discount the possibility of a second season, Chow adamantly maintained that the series was intended as a standalone show and it will not tease spinoffs. The director then went on to discuss the possibility of continuing the series, with Chow believing Obi-Wan Kenobi's sequels will share "the same process of making sure that there was a real story to tell."

Though the series promised to tackle the lingering regrets of the titular Jedi, Chow believed that Obi-Wan Kenobi will still have a hopeful message. "Tonally, it's a mixture," the director said. "We were trying to get that weight, coming out of Revenge of the Sith, but ultimately, at the end of the day, it's about hope, and it's about [Obi-Wan] then going on into A New Hope."

The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere on May 27 on Disney+.
