At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Indira Varma explained why she ultimately decided to join the Star Wars universe thanks to The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal.

During the event's Obi-Wan Kenobi panel streamed live on YouTube, Varma revealed that Pascal, her former Game of Thrones co-star, and his performance in The Mandalorian was one of the main factors that influenced her decision to join Kenobi as the disillusioned Imperial officer Tala Durith. In Game of Thrones, Varma and Pascal played the respective roles of Ellaria Sand and Oberyn Martell, introduced in Season 4 as the passionate lovers from Dorne. Varma mentioned that it was also the opportunity to work with Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow that greatly drew her to the project, with Pascal providing her an "amazing review" of the director.

"Having seen [Deborah Chow's] work on [The Mandalorian] -- I have to confess, I didn't know much about Star Wars," Varma said. "The Mandalorian completely sucked me in. Having seen Deborah's amazing work on it, and also my mate [Pedro Pascal]...he gave Deborah such an amazing review that I had to meet her. Just talking to her, Deborah cares so much about character work and relationships and that's personally what I'm interested in. And I think that's why [Obi-Wan Kenobi] is so strong, because of the character work we all got to do."

Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Is Not Happening -- For Now

Obi-Wan Kenobi was directed by Chow, who also directed two episodes in Season 1 of The Mandalorian. Obi-Wan Kenobi is set a decade following the events of Star Wars; Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005), where actor Ewan McGregor returns as the titular Jedi secretly living on the desert planet Tatooine. After Season 1 concluded its six-episode run in June 2022, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy addressed the future of Obi-Wan Kenobi at Star Wars Celebration, confirming that Season 2 is "not in active development" as of writing.

"But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility," Kennedy teased of Kenobi's status changing. "That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another. Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration]. We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road."

In addition to McGregor, the series also featured the return of some key characters from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. These include Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader, Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars, Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine, Jimmy Smits as Senator Bail Organa and Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn. Varma was one of Star Wars' newcomers in the series, joined by Moses Ingram as Inquisitor Reva Sevanders and Sung Kang as a live-action Fifth Brother from Star Wars Rebels, among others.

All six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are available to stream now on Disney+. Pascal can be seen in The Mandalorian Season 3, premiering new episodes Wednesdays on the service while Seasons 1 and 2 are also available now.
