Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor described the experience of making the new series versus his prior entries into the franchise, comparing the upcoming Disney+ show to a film experience.
During an Obi-Wan Kenobi press conference, McGregor said, "The technology is so different from when we made the original movies that it felt like a different experience anyway." He went on to say, "But because Deb directed them all and it's her singular vision throughout, it did feel like we were just making one movie. And the episodic nature of our series falls really cleverly in the story line, but it is one driving narrative."
McGregor compared Obi-Wan Kenobi to another Star Wars series, stating, "I think The Mandalorian feels more episodic, if you like, because it suits that storytelling and it, of course, has a driving storyline through each season. But ours is like a movie that just happens to be split up into these episodes. That's how I feel about it."
Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow remarked on how delving into a singular iconic character from the franchise, saying, "I think I was the most excited about getting the opportunity to do a character different story. You know, in a similar way, you know, obviously it's a different tone, but something like Joker or Logan where, you know, you take one character out of a big franchise and then you really have the time and you go a lot deeper with the character."
The upcoming series will follow the titular Jedi during his life in exile. Apart from McGregor's return to Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi also marks the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, in his first reprisal of the role since 2005's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.
Christensen's Darth Vader will presumably be leading the hunt for his former Jedi master. Rupert Friend, in the first live-action appearance of fan-favorite Force sensitive assassin the Inquisitor, will be joining in that search alongside Moses Ingram's Inquisitor Reva, aka Third Sister; and Sung Kang's Fifth Brother.
The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere on Disney+ on May 27.
