Star Wars is known for many of its iconic costumes, but one costuming decision that fans have often questioned is Obi-Wan Kenobi's choice to wear his Jedi robes while in hiding on Tatooine. While these iconic robes mark his role as a Jedi Master, they were not as practical for trying to hide his identity, especially in a world so hostile to Jedi after Order 66. However, in a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Ewan McGregor revealed that the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series might finally address this issue and allow the Jedi more outfit choices to help him blend in and hide from the Empire.

In the interview, McGregor was reluctant to give many details for fear of spoiling any major reveals for the fans. Still, he notes that the costume "is probably slightly different, you know, than you might expect." He quickly segued back into discussing the role itself, but this brief statement indicates that Obi-Wan might have a more varied wardrobe in the new series.

Some fans might argue that Obi-Wan Kenobi's original outfit was meant to resemble everyday clothing for most citizens of the galaxy, and he would not have stood out as much wearing the robes. His clothing does bear some resemblance to Owen Lars' outfit and even Luke's original clothing. However, even if the robes were originally meant to be commonplace, the Star Wars media that has come after the Original Trilogy has used Obi-Wan's outfit as the main template for Jedi clothing throughout the eras. Thus, Obi-Wan's robes have become more immediately associated with the Jedi in the audience's minds since the Original Trilogy's release.

While Obi-Wan Kenobi does wear the same outfit for most of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and for his appearance in Star Wars: Rebels, he has been shown to alter his clothing choices, especially in the name of a mission. For instance, in a Season 4 arc of The Clone Wars, Obi-Wan goes undercover to investigate an assassination plot against Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. In order to cement his cover, the Jedi Order fakes Obi-Wan's death, and he undergoes facial reconstruction surgery so that he can more fully embody the role of Rako Hardeen, the Jedi's would-be assassin.

Obi-Wan does undergo surgery again at the end of the arc to regain his original appearance. However, his time in disguise as Rako Hardeen shows that he was capable of undercover work and that he had the skills necessary to successfully disguise himself when necessary. The arc is also the first time that Obi-Wan is shown using the code name "Ben," laying further groundwork for Obi-Wan's time in exile on Tatooine. If Obi-Wan was willing to go to those lengths for his investigation, a simple fashion change while in hiding would be a small chore, and he would understand the necessity.

The Kimmel interview also presents another, more mundane possible reason for costume changes for Obi-Wan. Kimmel notes that fashion probably changed throughout the time that Obi-Wan was in exile. This discussion might have been partially inspired by McGregor's role as Roy Halston in the upcoming Netflix series Halston, based on the designer's life. While Obi-Wan may not have been fashion-focused, it's likely that he would be paying attention to what other people around him wore so that he could blend in better.

McGregor's statement in the interview does indicate that the changes to the costume might not be major, but he still suggests that Obi-Wan will possibly be wearing a slightly different outfit or even more than one outfit throughout the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. While Obi-Wan's robes initially may have been intended to represent everyday clothing, making changes to his wardrobe in exile could showcase his undercover skills more. Obi-Wan Kenobi's outfit has become iconic, but new clothing choices could help viewers immerse themselves more in his adventures while hiding from the Empire and protecting Luke Skywalker.
