While the teaser trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi suggests that the series will mainly focus on the Inquisitors’ hunt for Jedi, there could also be the opportunity to give Beru Whitesun Lars a little more spotlight in the Star Wars universe. The series could expand upon her character to show that she was more than just a formative influence on Luke Skywalker, and that she had her own dreams and goals in addition to her desire to nurture her family and her community.

Beru has taken the spotlight before. In the anthology Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, Meg Cabot’s “Beru Whitesun Lars” gave Beru the chance to briefly shine. The story took place after Beru’s death as she reflected on her life raising Luke and the chances she passed up along the way. Cabot also highlighted the lack of attention that Beru has received as a character. Beru told the reader, "Look, I get it. To most people, I'm just Luke Skywalker's Aunt Beru, the old lady who's always bustling around the kitchen, pouring everyone blue milk. I'm the one who wouldn't stop nagging Luke's uncle Owen to let him go to the Academy already." In Star Wars: A New Hope, Beru was mainly defined by her relationship to Luke and her role as a mother figure to him.

Star Wars Aunt Beru

Cabot expanded upon Beru's history using the small amount of information from Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. In "Beru Whitesun Lars," Beru confided in the reader that she could have been a chef in another life. After being impressed by Beru's blue-milk cheese, one of her teachers suggested that Beru could open up her own café or restaurant. She considered the possibility multiple times throughout her life, especially after she learned that she and Owen could not have children.

Ultimately, though, becoming a chef was not Beru's dream. She later stated, "I think my teacher was wrong: making cheese wasn't what I was born to do. I was born to make people feel good when everything around them seemed awful." This talent and her overwhelming love for Luke helped her create a space in which Luke could grow and thrive, despite the horrors of the Empire's spread throughout the galaxy.

"Beru Whitesun Lars" celebrated Beru's quiet bravery. From the moment she chose to take Luke in, she knew that Darth Vader coming for Luke would be a constant danger (as depicted in this Obi-Wan Kenobi first look image). "The day that Ben Kenobi put that baby in my arms was both the best and worst day of my life," she stated. "Best because Owen and I couldn't have a child of our own, and suddenly we did. And worst because ... well, I knew that happiness was never going to last. And I was right, wasn't I?" Despite the fact that Beru knew that taking in Luke could one day mean her own death, she instead strove to make sure that Luke had the happiest childhood possible (also referenced in the trailer) and never resented or blamed him for the danger he unknowingly placed her in.

At the story's end, Beru lamented the fact that she never got the chance to tell her story, and she thanked the reader for taking the time to listen to her tale. However, "Beru Whitesun Lars" was still only a brief glimpse into her life, her dreams and her fears. Obi-Wan Kenobi could be an opportunity to delve more into Beru's character, even if she is not a major focus in the series. Beru was more than just Luke's aunt or Owen's girlfriend and later wife. She was her own person as well, and she deserves more attention in the Star Wars franchise. While Beru's goals and dreams might seem mundane in a universe filled with galactic war and space wizards, her story represented the quieter side of the galaxy. Through Beru, Obi-Wan Kenobi could further highlight the ordinary people who became collateral damage for the Empire’s machinations and Palpatine’s desire to wipe out the Jedi Order with his army of Inquisitors.

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 25.
