Although the second season of Black Sails won't premiere until January, Starz has already renewed its pirate drama for a third. The cable channel similarly ordered a second season in July 2013, five months before the series premiere.

Created by Jonathan Steinberg and Robert Levine, Black Sails is set two decades before the events of Treasure Island, as the feared pirate Captain Flint, his crew and allies search for the ultimate prize, and fight for the survival of the criminal haven of New Providence Island.

“The incredible world that Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine have created continues to unfold in Season 2," Carmi Zlotnik, Starz's managing director, said in a statement. "Flint’s journey is riveting, and around him, Jon and Robert have woven an intricate web of conflict, betrayal, and redemption for the other characters that we believe will keep fans of the show coming back for more. We think that season three will bring even more of the drama and lore that has made it a hit both in the U.S. and internationally.”

Executive produced by Michael Bay, the series averaged 5.3 million viewers in its first season. Black Sails returns Jan. 24 on Starz.
