In practical terms, DC Comics' Dark Knight will likely live forever as far as comic readers are concerned, but Batman will be stretching his shelf life -- and presence -- in a new way in 2014.

Today, the publisher announced via a story in USA Today that it will launch a new weekly series titles "Batman: Eternal" in the Spring of 2014. The series' writing team will be led by best-selling "Batman" scribe Scott Snyder and sports a lineup including James Tynion IV, John Layman, Ray Fawkes and Tim Seeley. Current "Detective Comics" artist Jason Fabok will be the lead artist for the book, though others will doubtlessly rotate in.

"It's a place for me to be able to work with good friends in terms of shaping Gotham in a bigger, grander and more game-changing way than ever before," Snyder told USA Today. "We want this to be a place where you get to tell a story about anything you want in Gotham, so long as we're also moving this big story forward in the background."

Beyond "Eternal" -- only the latest weekly series from DC, which has a history of publishing universe-wide stories in the same format, including "52," "Countdown To Final Crisis" and "Trinity" -- Snyder is also a part of a special anniversary issue of "Detective Comics," along with Batman luminaries including Frank Miller, Paul DIni, Neal Adams and more. With DC Comics' having relaunched its entire line with new #1s in 2011, the publisher is taking advantage of having a second "Detective Comics" #27 to celebrate the Dark Knight's introduction to the world in the original #27 from 1939. The issue hits stores in January, ahead of the debut of new creative team Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato.

"He's still that guy who if I could meet him, I have a whole paragraph in in my mind: 'This is why you matter so much to me,'" Snyder said of having his work appear alongside Miller's. "Hopefully one day. His Batman stuff is just untouchable."
