A lot of the elements of Person of Interest are beginning to come together as we get further into Season 2. While we’re discovering more about Amy Acker’s Root and see that the Machine is beginning to take on a personality of its own, two characters we’re really interested in seeing circle one another are Kevin Chapman’s Fusco and Taraji P. Henson’s Carter.
The two NYPD detectives discovered at the end of Season 1 they’re both working for Michael Emerson’s Finch and Jim Caviezel’s Reese, but that doesn’t mean the storyline is over. Spinoff Online participated in roundtable interviews with Chapman and Henson at New York Comic Con in which the two actors teased how there will continue to be tension between their characters.
“I think they’re kind of building some kind of tension between he and I,” Henson said. “And he still has a lot of things to answer for from last season. He’s a dirty birdie, and even though she kind of trusts him a little bit, you know women, we have that instinct and something about him she still doesn’t trust all the way. So we’re going to deal with that. It’s not all happy-go-lucky. There’s still some unanswered questions and some things that she is still a little cloudy about him.”
Chapman said his favorite moment of Person of Interest to date is the scene in the season finale in which Fusco and Carter realize they’re working for the same people. Although Fusco seemingly has come to the side of good, and has even tried to save Reese several times, Chapman teased that his character’s loyalties are still unclear.
“I think the sense of duality to Fusco, I think the fact that you don’t know if he’s a good guy doing bad things or a bad guy doing good things, and I think those are the kinds of things people talk about,” he said,. “We’re [filming] Episode 8, so Episode 7, Fusco takes some rather interesting turns that of course we won’t reveal.”
With that being said, Chapman loves Fusco’s redemption storyline over the past two seasons.
“I think in the first episode this season when [Reese] referred to him as a friend, I thought that was kind of cool,” he said. “When he says, ‘I’m looking for my friend,’ and Fusco’s tied up with the ball in his mouth, and he goes, alright, maybe I have two friends. So I thought that was a turning moment in their relationship.”
Although Henson said she doesn’t think there will be any sort of romance between Reese and Carter and that there isn’t a way for Reese to feel that sort of love for another person now that he’s saving lives, she teased the close relationship between her character and Caviezel’s will be a point of contention between Carter and Fusco.
“I think Carter definitely knows a more personal side, certainly of Reese than Fusco would because of their background in the service,” she said. “They have definitely built a relationship, a friendship. They actually really, really care about each other.”
The two actors couldn’t talk much about the upcoming season, but Henson did say that episode 8 will be a big one for Carter, and that we’re going to start dealing with the missing detective that Fusco sank in the river. She also teased that Elias, played by Enrico Colantoni, will be making a big return. Henson promised that Carter’s detective nature will get the best of her this season.
“She wants to know where the information is coming from,” Henson said. “That’s next for her. You know women, we have to know everything.”
Chapman also discussed how Fusco will be used in the upcoming episodes.
“Fusco is sometimes that little brother that nobody wanted,” he explained. “He sometimes finds himself trying to get in the game, and he’s somewhat a little excluded from what is really going on between Reese and Mr. Finch. A lot of that I think has to do with his past. He’s trusted but not 100 percent. I think a lot of that comes into play.”
Person of Interest airs Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
