For the better part of the last two years, the Undisputed Era – consisting of leader Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong – have been draped in gold. Cole's NXT title loss to Keith Lee at the Great American Bash, however, means the stable is without some form of title for the first time in well over a year. With the golden prophecy over, the question becomes where the most dominant faction in the history of NXT goes from here.

While it's been rumored that at least some of the group will be heading to Raw or Smackdown, nothing has been confirmed. The possibility sounds enticing, but there are a number of factors to consider beforehand. The most pressing question is whether or not all four members would get called up. Cole, the most marketable of the four, is a no-brainer for either the red or blue brand. There's no certainty that O'Reilly, Fish and Strong would join him, though. At the end of the day, it's likely in the group's best interest to split up, with Cole embarking on a solo journey while O'Reilly, Fish and Strong stay in NXT.

Cole's Call-Up a No-Brainer, With or Without the UE

Of the Undisputed Era's four members, Cole is easily the standout. One of just two triple crown winners in the yellow brand's history, he's accomplished everything he needs to while showcasing main event level mic skills and spectacular selling ability throughout. It's clear that WWE has big plans for Cole regardless of whether he goes to Smackdown or Raw. Look no further than his NXT championship matches against Daniel Bryan on the former or Seth Rollins on the latter for evidence. Cole's six-foot, 210-pound frame may not amaze Vince McMahon, however, he more than makes up for it with a charismatic presence that has drawn comparisons to Shawn Michaels.

With a versatile skill-set, Cole could succeed on Raw or Smackdown. If the Undisputed Era were to get called up as a group, Raw would be the better fit, as it tends to be the faction-heavy show. Cole would also be able to shine with his promos and overall acting ability. Smackdown – which emphasizes work rate – would provide the longest-ever NXT champion the opportunity to remind people just how good he is in the ring. There's an endless amount of dream matches that Cole could have with the likes of Bryan, as well as fellow Ring of Honor alum Cesaro and Sami Zayn. Fellow technical wizards such as Drew Gulak and Shinsuke Nakamura would also offer up classics, as would former NXT rival Matt Riddle.

NXT a Better Fit for O'Reilly, Fish and Strong

If O'Reilly, Fish and Strong – none of whom are above six feet or 200 pounds – were to be called up, they would have to hope McMahon buys in. Sadly, history isn't in their favor. Recent examples of small but talented NXT call-ups being booked poorly include legit amateur wrestler Chad Gable, Ricochet and more. As a tag team, there's also a chance that O'Reilly and Fish would struggle to find a place on the card long-term. NXT's smaller, more technical roster is a better fit for the trio, and there are still enough compelling storylines to keep the group around.

One program that could work well would be Fish and O'Reilly against NXT flag bearers Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano. Ciampa most recently lost to a red hot Karrion Kross at NXT Takeover: In Your House, while Gargano – the brand's first-ever triple crown winner – was unsuccessful in his last two attempts at the North American title. With the former tag team champs both plotting their next move, there is no better time for another mini DIY reunion. All four men have prior history, as Gargano and Ciampa knocked off the Undisputed Era in the opening round of the 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, while a further feud was cut short following a neck injury to Gargano.

Strong – a former ROH triple crown winner – has been in NXT longer than any of his UE counterparts. During that time, he's shown his range as both a heel and babyface, while also being a former tag team and North American champion. His most recent loss in a strap match against the mysterious Dexter Lumis was seen as a step down by some, however, it also offered the messiah of the backbreaker a chance to display his acting skills as he faced his own personal boogeyman.

A six-man feud against NXT's newest stable Legado del Fantasma could help Strong get back on track. The match would be engaging, simply because of the contrast in styles. Fish loves to utilize his kickboxing background, while O'Reilly is a technical mastermind, and Strong slowly wears his opponents down as his matches progress. Legado del Fantasma – which consists of cruiserweight champion Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde and Raul Mendoza – offer a faster-paced look due to their lucha libre background. Escobar is also the cruiserweight champion, meaning that he could move into a side program for the belt with Strong as well.

Regardless as to whether the Undisputed Era stays together or not, there's no denying the impact they've had on the NXT brand, especially since moving to the USA Network. With decades of experience under their belt and a willingness to adapt, there's no limit to what each performer can achieve.
