The Nun has outperformed box office estimates scaring up $53.5 million at the domestic box office this weekend giving the fifth installment of the popular Conjuring franchise its highest opening weekend to date.
Industry analysts last week had predicted the spinoff prequel would have the strongest opening in the horror film series with estimates placed around $36-45 million including Thursday night previews. After the highest-earning Thursday night previews in the series at $5.4 million and the highest opening day figure this past Friday at $22.3 million, The Nun has outpaced even those estimates.
The previous highest opening weekend in the Conjuring film series had been the 2013 original which opened to $41.8 million. The new film is also has the second highest September opening weekend of all time, just behind last year's It which opened to $123.1 million, the largest all time opening weekend for a horror movie.
With The Nun also earning $77.5 million overseas this past weekend bringing its combined global box office opening weekend to $131 million, it looks like there are still plenty of scares left in Warner Bros. successful horror franchise.
Directed by Corin Hardy, The Nun stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, and Jonas Bloquet. It’s playing in theaters everywhere.
