Noto, Wood and Geddes launch NYC gallery shows this weekend

Comic artists continue their takeover of the fine-art world with three gallery exhibitions starting over the next few days: Phil Noto has just launched his movie-themed solo show 35mm at the Bold Hype gallery in New York City, while Ashley Wood and Jeremy Geddes are debuting new work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, also in New York, over the weekend. Examples from all three artists below.

Geddes, known best to comic fans for his covers for various IDW series, launches his show Exhale alongside Wood’s Machine Sabbath. Geddes’ paintings in this exhibition contrast massive acts of explosive violence alongside the fragility of the humans caught up in them, all rendered in photorealistic detail.

In the same gallery, Ashley Wood, his fellow Australian, showcases some typically dark expressionistic and erotically charged canvasses. Wood’s preoccupations should come as no surprise to comic fans who’ve followed his work through similarly dark, expressionistic and erotically charged comics such as Popbot. I’m sure Wood’s irrepressible subversive humor will sneak into the canvasses somewhere, too.

Noto‘s show at Bold Hype consists of the Floridian’s usual ultra-stylish take on many iconic and much loved movie characters and scenes. As the gallery’s press release says “sleek female figures, text, and retro design elements are a trademark of his paintings”, and those trademark vintage influences will be familiar to the comic fans who’ve loved his work since his classic Birds of Prey covers and before.
