Back when it aired in 2014, Noragami became an instant hit. It had every element fans could ever hope for - comedy, romance, lots of fights, a tight plot and characters that weren't cardboard cut-outs of anime tropes. Needless to say, the most beloved character from the series was its protagonist, Yato.

Apart from Yato, the anime featured a multitude of gods and various supernatural creatures, each of them strong in their own might. Fans often had a tough time gauging who was stronger than their opponent, because all of said gods not only had formidable powers, but extremely powerful and loyal shinki (their weapons) who would go to great lengths to protect their gods and goddesses. For those who haven't read the manga or are a little rusty on their Noragami knowledge, here are some of its most powerful gods.

10 Tenjin

Also known as the God of Learning, Tenjin is shown to appear in the human world as an old man in perfect health, who also happens to have a lot of wealth to his name. Why? That's because irrespective of what era it is, people always pray to the God of Learning to help with their exams!

9 Ebisu

Ebisu is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune, and he's shown to be a pretty straight-laced guy. He's inclined heavily towards performing science-supernatural elements, something which gets him in trouble with the other Gods, as a result of which he's forced to undergo a reincarnation. He's also shown to be incredibly wealthy but averse to physical fights.

8 Okuninushi

Despite being one of the more popular deities who is part of Japan's myths and lore, Okuninushi doesn't have much of a role to play in the anime or the manga.

He is the god of matchmaking, business, farming and nation-building, along with being one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. So it's no surprise he has a huge number of followers.

7 Arahabaki

Defeated by the heavens, this Emishi god reincarnated and went back to taking control of heaven's guidepost. He learned from his lesson and made sure his shinki followed proper protocol (aka listening to every word of the heavens), and ensured the shinki learned to respect the orders of the heavens.

6 Takemikazuchi

He is sometimes called the god of swords, but he is most popularly known as the god of thunder. He holds a very high position in heaven, is extremely powerful and yet contrary to his position, he's shown to be a very lazy god. He takes ages to complete any task, if at all he decides to do it, but ironically he's always looking to be part of a fight so that he can get away from the boredom of the heavens.

5 Rabou

His past is mysterious, and the only thing fans are told about him is that he is a God of Calamity. Usually one wouldn't assume such a God to be powerful, but seeing how he challenged Yato to a duel, one can safely assume he believed he was strong enough to not only fight him, but to win over him.

4 Bishamonten

Bishamon in Noragami.

She also sometimes goes by her other name, Veena. She is a goddess of war and warriors, but is also one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. She's shown to be extremely fierce and merciless when it comes to hunting her prey. Such is her wrath that even Kofuku feared for Yato's light when he went out looking for a duel with her.

3 Kofuku

She changes her name in order to be perceived as a goddess of fortune, but the reality is that she's a goddess of poverty and it's something she always goes out of her way to hide, especially from humans.

Most fans assume that Veena is more powerful than Kofuku, but one scene in the anime would prove otherwise - where Kofuku threatens Veena with dire consequences if she hurts Yato, and Veena actually backs off. This goes to show even the mighty Bishamon was afraid of Kofuku's powers.

2 Yato

The protagonist of this anime, Yato's past is hidden till the very end, when it is revealed he is actually the god of calamity. However, he fashions himself to be the god of fortune and his friends Hiyori and Yukine inspire him to be a better version of himself, constantly. Despite having a past filled with blood and being a child of abuse himself, Yato wants nothing but the best for those around him.

1 Izanami

The queen of the underworld is among one of the most powerful gods shown in the anime. Not only that, she's known to have given birth to many gods, including Ebisu. She is cursed with never finding a Shinki because her environment demands a constant influx of corrupted souls. On the bright side, she's impossible to kill which means no matter how strong her opponent is, they can never defeat her.
