Female characters don’t get much screen time when it comes to Shounen anime, which is why Hiyori Iki is the kind of Shounen heroine that stands out in a sea of poorly written and easily forgotten female love interests.

This high schooler is feminine and quirky. She loves wrestling as much as she loves cute animals, she’s as kind as she is strict, and she’s the glue that holds her whacky group of friends together during any and every crisis. Hiyori was shipped with Yato the moment the two met, and for those interested in knowing more facts about this spunky girl, keep reading.

10 The Meaning Of Her Name

Non-Japanese speakers are unaware of this fact, but her name is actually a homophone (a set of words with similar pronunciations but different spellings and/or meanings).

It’s a homophone for “fair weather” which is interesting since the kanji of Yukine’s and Yato’s names mean Snow and Night.

9 The Reason Why She Can Smell Yato

Yato and Hiyori

Ever since a truck struck Hiyori and her soul became loose from her body, she became a sort of half-phantom. As such, she developed special abilities, like leaving her body behind and traveling whenever she wants.

Or the ability to smell from long distances, as well as to be able to recall the owners of particular scents.

8 Her Other Supernatural Abilities

As a half-phantom, those aren’t the only two of her supernatural abilities. She is also shown to be able to hear supernatural creatures from the other side of the Far Shore, a fact revealed only in the manga.

This is an ability handed down to her from her mother’s side of the family. She can also read other people’s memories, as she did with Yato, and learn about his second Shinki Sakura and his childhood.

7 She Has A Strong Moral Compass

Hiyori has traits of a typical Shounen heroine, some of which are a bit more problematic and stereotypical than others: kind-hearted, a little airheaded, and always ready to help.

However, the one place where she differs is that she stands her ground when she sees someone doing the wrong things, no matter who they are. This is shown when she reprimands Yato consistently for being lazy or scolds Yukine for being a thief.

6 Her Relationship With Kofuku

Kofuku and Hiyori are shown to be on excellent terms, exactly how girls would bond with each other. Kofuku even has a nickname for her friend, Hiyorin, and she often teases her about her feelings for Yato.

Hiyori trusts Kofuku, as is seen when she rushes to her to help Yato when he’s been missing for a while.

5 She Realizes Her Love For Yato In The Manga

The mangaka of Noragami (Adachitoka) finally revealed in the manga what Hiyori’s feelings for Yato were. In the manga’s 79th chapter, "Near Love, Far Love," Hiyori finally realizes that her feelings for Yato are not platonic, but romantic.

She blushes when she realizes this fact, which visually confirms her romantic feelings.

4 Kofuku Matchmakes The Two

This is yet another incident that happens only in the manga since it was never animated by the studio. In a filler chapter, it is shown that a matchmaking ceremony takes place.

As a joke, Kofuku ties the plaques of Hiyori and Yato. It is later on mentioned that matches made by Kofuku mostly end in disaster, leading fans to wonder whether or not Yato and Hiyori would be together forever.

3 She Is Loyal

One of the most outstanding qualities that Hiyori has, which is often overlooked, is how loyal she is. She never gives up on her friends even when they have given up on her. Initially, while she had a problem with Yato’s and Yukine’s attitudes, she warmed up to them and stood by their sides when no one else believed in them.

This is especially true for Yato, when she catches Bishamon trying to kill him. She never once suspects him of doing any wrongdoing, and blindly helps him whenever she can.

2 She Can Be Absentminded Sometimes

Despite being a kind and loyal friend, Hiyori is shown to be absentminded at times. This is highlighted by the fact of how her priorities can often be messed up.

For example, when Yato explains to her that she’s now a half-phantom who can roam freely and that her tail connects her to her body, she was disappointed that her connection wasn’t “wireless,” instead of being angry at Yato for revealing this information so late. This is is a trope that is unfortunately often utilized by the Shounen genre.

1 But She Can Be Perceptive

One of the best examples of Hiyori’s perceptiveness is when Yato and Yukine are discussing his past. She immediately understands that by not telling Yukine how he died, Yato was only trying to protect his feelings.

In spite of this flip-flopping of Hiyori being a Shounen trope, it also helps make her more relatable as a person. She comes across as a layered character, instead of being a simple anime character who is always smart, which is another trope often utilized in Shounen anime when depicting female characters.
