A lot of superheroes might call Gotham City home, but it's Batman's town. And the Dark Knight has a supporting cast that aids him in his quest for justice. But beyond the Batman Family, Gotham has a history of heroes who are not connected to the Bat.

These crime fighters go it alone and don't need the Dark Knight's permission to ply their trade. While Batman might be Gotham's most famous defender, these heroes prove that he's not the only superhero with game in town.

GREEN LANTERN (ALAN SCOTT)

Long before Hal Jordan joined the Green Lantern Corps, the late Martin Nodell -- creator of the Pillsbury Doughboy -- breathed life into a different kind of emerald guardian in 1940. The original Green Lantern was not part of any intergalactic police force. He was a lone crimefighter in DC's toughest city, who even predated Batman in some continuities.

Alan Scott's power has nothing to do with the Guardians of the Universe. It has even been suggested by some fans that his power is the purest Green Lantern energy of all. This Green Lantern's might originates from the "Starheart" -- a magical entity that is the product of a meteor landing on Earth. And when the Starheart saves Alan Scott's life from a railroad bridge collapsing, he fashions a ring and dons iconic red, green, and purple to fight crime.

MANHUNTER (KATE SPENCER)

Kate Spencer as Manhunter

Prosecutor Kate Spencer has a real hunger for justice. Having seen many dangerous criminals go free, she becomes a law unto herself, first by tracking down supervillain and mass murderer Copperhead, all with equipment she lifted from an evidence room.

Kate fights crime both in the courtroom and on the streets of Gotham as Manhunter. And she does it all while raising a son and dealing with very human issues, like average relationship problems and personal baggage from the past. Since she was created by Marc Andreyko and Jesus Saiz, Kate joined TV's Arrowverse appearance as Oliver Queen's attorney, and she's also joined the Birds of Prey in comics.

RAGMAN

Ragman

In Pre-Crisis DC continuity, Rory Regan was a Vietnam War veteran who grew up with his father running a Gotham City pawn shop. Following his dad's torture and death at the hands of criminals, Rory adopts the persona of Ragman, the "Tatterdemalion of Justice," to avenge his father's murder and bring an end to the tyranny of crime.

Post-Crisis,  Rory starts as a more literal "Ragman," helping out the neighborhood people by buying their used items for his secondhand store. Now, each patch on Ragman’s suit is made from the soul of a villain he's defeated, adding a much darker and more esoteric dimension to the Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert creation.

ETRIGAN THE DEMON

Etrigan the Demon from DC Comics

Created by Jack Kirby,  Etrigan the Demon is a creature from Hell who fights on the side of righteousness. Etrigan is the son of the mega-demon Belial. He is first brought to the Earthly realm by Merlin the Magician in the middle ages. Merlin attaches Etrigan's being to one of King Arthur's Knights, Jason Blood, making Jason immortal but with a catch. He'll always have the Demon Etrigan inside him.

In the present day, Jason Blood lives on, and he's frequently in Gotham City. While he's able to summon the rhyming demon Etrigan with a simple incantation, Blood has also served as one of Batman's mystical consultants on more than one occasion.

THE CREEPER

The Creeper was one of Steve Ditko's DC creations

Conceived by famed Marvel creator Steve Ditko and co-created by Don Segall, the Creeper is just as crazy as he looks. He is a loping, bouncing, giggling cross between Sabretooth and the Joker who has enhanced strength and a healing factor. His alter ego is reporter/talk show host, Jack Ryder, which makes him one of Gotham City's more famous residents.

Following the Reign in Hell event miniseries, Creeper was recast as one of a demonic species with equally demonic powers. That origin has since been retconned, though, and his powers now come from stem cell experiments conducted by a scientist named Dr. Yatz. The Creeper can be both hugely annoying and very dangerous, with extreme agility and a maniacal laugh that could even drive the Joker batty.
