The world of Noblesse revolves around a character named Raizel who awakens from centuries stuck in stasis and finds himself enrolled in a high school founded by his former servant, who is somehow still alive. But this isn't a story about a regular hero trapped in a supernatural world; quite the opposite, Raizel is a member of a mysterious race called the Nobles, supernatural beings once worshipped by humans, and is now getting to meet the human race, and the modern world, firsthand. Unfortunately, Raizel soon finds himself having to contend against an antagonistic organization called the Union, who seems to have power around the world.

Originating as a South Korean comic that would go on to have over 500 chapters, the story has had quite a few adaptations over the years, including a 2020 anime series. Let's take a look at what we know so far about the anime. That said, even for fans familiar with the series, there are bound to be some spoilers.

10 It All Started As A Webtoon

Author Son Jeho and illustrator Lee Kwangsu originally developed the story as a webtoon, which is another name for a digital web manhwa or comic. Having been first published in late 2007, it finished its original run sometime in 2019.

First posted on Naver Webtoon, an online portal that shares its name with the digital comics it hosts, it notably became one of the first series to receive an English translation on the WEBTOON platform.

9 The Series Revolves Around An Immortal Race

In the series, we are introduced to a nearly immortal and powerful race called Nobles. Once worshipped by humans, they are often compared to vampires and do share some of the famous monster's traits. For example, they have the power to transform humans into mutants, who feed on blood to survive.

That said, they technically aren't vampires and there are some important differences, as pure Nobles don't need to consume blood and actually try to protect the human race from predators, revolving around the concept of "Noblesse Oblige," loosely meaning "nobility obligates." If you are wondering about the name, the Nobles adopted their name after a special member of their race called a Noblesse, the most powerful member of the species...

8 The Main Character Is A Noblesse

The main character, Raizel, also known as Rai, is a Noblesse, one such pure-blood Noble, making him a protector of Nobles. Awakened from an 820-year sleep, Raizel finds himself enrolled at a high school, where he gets to learn more about the human world, as well as learning the cause of his slumber and encountering the antagonistic Union, who plans to take over the world.

7 Raizel Has A Servant Named Frankenstein

Rai has a devoted servant named Frankenstein who is something of a deuteragonist of the story. Unlike Rai, he seems to be human, despite having somehow survived for nearly a millennium. He currently is the founder and principal of the high school Rai finds himself enrolled him, which he created in part so Rai could have a normal life.

As the name suggests, he is a genius and a brilliant scientist. There are stories about him being a "mad scientist," but they seem to be nothing more than propaganda.  He actually seems to prefer conducting experiments on himself than any hapless victims or creations. After all, a normal human couldn't become practically immortal, or at least extremely long-lived, without a few modifications. Interestingly enough, it's his enemies who seem more interested in creating a "monster."

6 This Isn't The First Animation

Noblesse Awakening Raizel

Noblesse got its first animation back in 2015, which was released at the 17th Bucheon International Animation Festival, lasting a little less than 40 minutes. This animation was developed by the South Korean animation company Studio Animal. The following year, another OVA was released called Noblesse: Awakening, this time based around the first season of the webtoon.

5 The Series Will Be An International Co-Production

The original story originated with a South Korean webtoon, but the anime is going to be something of an international co-production. Japanese anime studio Production I.G will animate the series, having previously worked on Noblesse: Awakening. For fans of the series who live outside of Asia, Crunchyroll will stream the series.
