Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley has offered up the latest update for his proposed Star Trek movie and it does not bode well for the future of the project.
"It doesn’t appear to be in my immediate future," Hawley said to Deadline about his Star Trek film. "I think when [new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts] came in, she took a look at the franchise and wanted to go in a different direction with it. But you know, life is long, we were very close to production but in this business that doesn’t mean much. You got to get out of the gate to be in the race if you know what I mean."
After he was hired to write and direct the production late last year, Hawley's Star Trek movie was reportedly put on the back burner at Paramount Pictures due to it including a plotline that concerns "a virus that wipes out vast parts of the known universe."
Previously, Hawley said that his Star Trek movie would be both unique and harken back to earlier incarnations of the franchise. "I have my own take on Star Trek... and going back to what I loved about the series Next Generation, when a lot of franchises focus on 'might makes right,' Star Trek is about exploration and humanity at its best, and diversity and creative problem solving," Hawley said in January. "There’s nothing better than that moment when William Shatner puts on his reading glasses and lowers Khan’s shields. It doesn’t cost anything. But it’s that triumphant feeling about smarting your enemy. For me, it’s about getting to those elements of the show."
