A new piece of promotional material for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home sees one of the webhead's classic villains calling him a friend rather than a foe.

The brief teaser trailer, uploaded to Twitter by @sebbazz, shows glimpses of the film's rogues gallery while also revealing a new line from Jamie Foxx's Electro. The lightning-clad villain can be heard saying, "My old friend, Spider-Man." While it could just be a sarcastic remark, it actually fits with Electro's characterization in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In the Marc Webb film, Maxwell Dillon developed a one-sided friendship with Spidey before his villainous transformation, and he was enraged when the hero didn't recognize him.

It's unclear whether Electro is addressing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man, or if he's even aware they are not the same version of the hero. The recent official trailer reveals that despite Otto Octavius referring to Tom Holland's Spider-Man as Peter, he is surprised to learn it's not the Tobey Maguire version under the Iron Spider suit. Of all the confirmed returning villains so far, Electro is the only one who never learned Peter's secret identity.

As for Electro himself, recent No Way Home trailers confirm his return will involve a more comic-accurate appearance, as he now channels yellow lightning and no longer has blue skin. The promo highlights that Doc Ock, Electro and Green Goblin all receive new looks, as Octavius absorbs some of Peter's nanites and Norman Osborn removes his helmet.

While the invading multiverse villains currently have no relation or past friendship with the MCU's version of Spider-Man, recent trailers suggest that Peter wishes them no ill will. Despite the dangers they pose, Peter seems disturbed by Doctor Strange's insistence that "It's their fate" to die fighting Spider-Man.

No Way Home is set to conclude the MCU's first trilogy of Spider-Man movies. Producer Amy Pascal said on the future of the franchise, "This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie." While Pascal claimed they would like to continue developing Spider-Man films with Marvel, it remains uncertain how Holland's version of Peter Parker will continue to be involved going forward.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
