Unfortunate news for Spider-Fans hoping for the web-head to join Earth's Mightiest Heroes in May. While many will rejoice in the 10-second Avengers teaser revealed earlier today during Marvel's live Twitter Q&A for "The Avengers," the possibility of a Spider-Man cameo in the film has been quashed. Director Joss Whedon denied the rumors of the web-slinger's appearance when asked directly about it during the live fan Q&A.
"There is no Spider-Man cameo," Whedon said via Twitter. "But the Avengers do turn off the dark."
The rumor of Spider-Man's possible cameo appearance in "The Avengers" began early last week when Radio Times interviewed Jenny Agutter, who plays a Council Member in the film. While there was no direct quote attributed to Agutter about Spider-Man's possible appearance, the publication did note that the actress "let slip that two of these [trailers] housed Spider-Man and Iron Man."
A few days later, the rumor gained more steam as Best Movies Ever reported a "trusted source" confirmed a brief cameo appearance from Spidey in "The Avengers." "This will be similar to how Wolverine made a quick cameo in 'X-Men: First Class' and Sony's going to make sure to promote their new Spider-Man movie any way they can," the source told Best Movies Ever. "Andrew's [Garfield] isn't a widely known actor so they want to get his face on everything, including 'The Avengers' even if it's for a couple seconds."
Whedon's flat denial of the rumor has brought an end to the speculation, leaving fans little hope the two Marvel film franchises will connect in the near future.
