It's now undetermined if a Nintendo Switch Pro is actually in players' futures.

During Digital Foundry's End of 2022 Lookback, John Lineman, a member of the YouTube channel's crew, revealed Nintendo's alleged plans for the Nintendo Switch. "From what I can understand from talking to different developers is that there was some sort of mid-generation Switch update planned at one point, and that seems to be no longer happening," Lineman said. For years, rumors of a Pro version of the base console have circulated on social media, but Lineman's declaration has made the possibility unclear.

Lineman continues by expressing his worry over Nintendo's alleged nervousness about transitioning from one console to the next. The YouTuber then lists the video game company's past blunders, including the underperforming sales of the Wii U and Game Cube. While it's unknown if Lineman's comments come from a trusted source, Digital Foundry has over 1 million subscribers with close connections to developers.

Nintendo Introduces the Switch in 2017

Released in 2017, the Nintendo Switch can be played in handheld mode or in a dock as a home console. The Switch entered development shortly after the Wii U's release, but developers fast-tracked the production following the latter console's commercial failure. Some of the Switch's first titles include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch.

From Switch to Switch Lite

In 2019, Nintendo introduced the Switch Lite, a more budget-friendly version of the popular console. Unlike the previous version, players can only use the Switch Lite in handheld mode and cannot cast games to outside sources. The Switch Lite can play most titles from the original console, but some games require players to use separate Joy-Con controllers. For example, 2018's Super Mario Party, Ring Fit Adventure and the Just Dance video game series.

In July 2021, Nintendo officially announced the Switch's OLED Model. The enhanced console features several improvements to the original, including a 7-inch OLED screen and an upgraded kickstand to help prop the Switch up on a flat surface. In the device's trailer, the video game company included gameplay of various titles alongside the OLED Model. The featured games were Metroid: Dread, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, among others.

Before the OLED Model's announcement, some believed Nintendo would unveil the Switch Pro at E3 2021. While the Switch is still a capable device, past complaints of Joy-Con drift have proven a hindrance to many players. Regarding home consoles, Nintendo previously released color variations of the Wii and the Wii U. However, the video game company developed several modifications to the Nintendo DS, including the DSi, 3DS and 2DS.
