However, he also says the movie needs some more polish, as the company is being "very careful" to "meet expectations" and "not betray customers."Miyamoto also explained that Nintendo would like to roll out more movies based on its various intellectual properties, as fans should be able to experience these IPs in a "variety of ways." That said, Miyamoto also clarified that any future Nintendo films would be produced one at a time, as opposed to having multiple films being made at once.

Of course, Nintendo's catalog of games isn't limited to just the Super Mario franchise. The company's other properties include such popular game franchises as The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Animal Crossing and Kirby, just to name a few.Pokémon is also a Nintendo franchise, though any film deals there would likely be handed by The Pokémon Company, not Nintendo -- as was the case with the 2019 live-action film Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

Nintendo confirmed in early 2018 that it had partnered with animation studio Illumination (Despicable Me, Sing) for a Super Mario Bros. film to be produced by Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri. Not counting Detective Pikachu, the upcoming animated Mario movie will mark the first film based on a Nintendo game to hit the big screen since the infamous live-action Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993.

This past September, Nintendo and Miyamoto announced the full voice cast for the Illumination-produced Mario film. It stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, as well as Charles Martinet in "surprise cameo" roles. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters in North America on Dec. 21, 2022.
