Nintendo has confirmed it's Super Mario CG-animated movie will arrive in theaters in 2022.

The theatrical release date for Super Mario was first revealed in Nintendo's corporate management policy briefing for the fiscal year ending March 2021. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa hosted a virtual live broadcast of the briefing due to coronavirus (COVID-19). During the "Visual Content Expansion" portion of the presentation, Shuntaro is stated, "Another way we are delivering Nintendo entertainment to a wider audience is with the Super Mario CG-animated movie, which is scheduled for theatrical release in 2022."

"Production is moving ahead smoothly, thanks to the collaboration between Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, known for the Minions movies, and Nintendo's Representative Director and Fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto, who is serving as co-producer," he continued. "The movie will be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures."

Nintendo and Illumination first announced they were partnering for a Super Mario movie in January 2018. Illumination's past works include the Despicable Me franchise and Secret Life of Pets.

Nintendo’s last major attempt to adapt the Mario franchise to film ended in the commercial and critical failure of Super Mario Bros. in 1993; with 40 reviews, the film sits at 23% on RottenTomatoes. Since then, the company has mainly focused on animated movies based on the Pokemon franchise.
