Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment have been working on a Mario movie that gamers are highly anticipating, especially since some recent film adaptations of video games have been great, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Pokémon Detective Pikachu. If the upcoming Mario film has the same success, fans may want other Nintendo video games to become movies, especially the ones that already have great stories.

It may even be possible for franchises like The Legend of Zelda or Mother to become movie series, and beyond that, there could one day be a Nintendo Cinematic Universe. But which of Nintendo's stories would make the best movies?

10 The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword Revealed A Lot Of Lore In The Series

The Legend of Zelda is a series with a lot of lore, and Skyward Sword is the earliest installment chronologically, answering some of the questions that fans had for years. In the game, Link is one of Skyloft's newest knights and, after obtaining the Goddess Sword, goes on a quest to find Zelda and defeat Demise.

The game, though it originally came out in 2011 for the Wii, is being remastered on the Switch, which will release next month. If the franchise were to ever get a film series, this title would be the best place to start.

9 Earthbound Is One Of Nintendo's Best RPGs

Ness leading his team in Earthbound game

Earthbound is one of the best RPGs of all time. It came out in 1995 for the SNES and is the second installment in the Mother trilogy. After a meteorite fell near his home, Ness encounters a bee from the future that warns him about Giygas, an alien overlord that wants to defeat Ness.

In order to stop Giygas, Ness must go on a quest to find eight melodies and is joined by Paula, Jeff, and Poo, who help him.

8 Super Mario Sunshine Is One Of The Few Games In The Series That Tells A Good Story

Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine released on the GameCube in 2002. In it, Mario was planning on having a relaxing vacation with Princess Peach and some of the toads at Isle Delfino, but upon arriving there, is arrested for supposedly vandalizing the island. In order to prove his innocence, he teams up with F.L.U.D.D., an invention made by Professor E. Gadd that can help clean the island up.

While doing so, they find the fake Mario and discover that he is actually Bowser Jr. in disguise. Seeing as how this was the first game Bowser's son was ever in, it's no wonder why he became a beloved antagonist in the series and it would be great to see a film adaptation of his first battle against Mario.

7 Donkey Kong Country Would Be A Hilarious Movie

Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong has come a long way since being Mario's enemy in the game named after him. These days, he has his own series, Donkey Kong Country, which began in 1994 on the SNES. After his bananas were stolen by King K. Rool and the Kremlings, he and Diddy Kong go on a journey to get them back.

The other games in the series also have simple stories that can easily become comedic films. It would be awesome to see a cameo of Donkey Kong in the upcoming Mario movie, followed by a film of his own.

6 Super Mario Galaxy Is Another Mario Game With A Good Story

Another epic journey of Mario's is Super Mario Galaxy, and it would be beautiful to see the worlds that Mario traveled to on the big screen. After Bowser attacked the Mushroom Kingdom and sent Mario to a distant planet, the titular character teamed up with Rosalina and the Lumas to take back their Power Stars, which Bowser took from them.

Super Mario Galaxy introduced a lot of new things to the franchise, and it would be interesting to see how a film would incorporate those ideas.

5 The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Would Be One Of The Best Fantasy Films Ever

Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time is arguably the most iconic game in The Legend of Zelda series and story in any Nintendo game. Link, who thought was a Kokiri, learns the truth about his Hylian heritage through the fairy Navi.

However, before dying, the Great Deku Tree tells Link to go to Hyrule Castle, where he meets Princess Zelda, who sends him on a quest to stop Ganondorf. Throughout the game, Link traveled through different places in Hyrule, the Sacred Realm, and time itself. This epic journey would be an amazing fantasy film.

4 The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask Is A Great Sequel For Ocarina Of Time & Also Deserves A Film

Majora's Mask is the sequel to Ocarina of Time, at least in one timeline, and though it didn't have as great of a story, it's good enough to deserve a movie if Ocarina of Time received the success the game had. While looking for Navi, Link encounters Skull Kid, who has two fairies of his own.

The fairies, Tatl and Tael, knock Link off of Epona, the horse that Link obtained in Ocarina of Time, and Skull Kid steals her along with the Ocarina, causing Link to go to another kingdom, Termina, beginning a new journey in which he must defeat Skull Kid, and more importantly, the mask he wears.

3 Pokémon: Red & Blue Could Be A Pokémon Movie Like No Other

There have been many Pokémon movies over the years, but none of them have been an accurate adaptation of the first games in the franchise.

It would be awesome to see Pokémon trainer rivals, Red and Blue, go on their quests to become Pokémon Masters as they catch Pokémon, use them to fight Kanto's Gym Leaders, and enter the Indigo Plateau.

2 Super Mario Odyssey Is One Of Mario's Biggest Adventures

Most Mario games take place in random locations, such as a field or a desert. But in Super Mario Galaxy, Mario and Cappy explore what feels like an actual world rather than just a generic course. Not only do they go to the Mushroom Kingdom, but many other kingdoms that have never been seen before.

The two even go to the moon as they try to stop Bowser and Peach's wedding. If any Mario game was to have a film adaptation, this epic journey would be the best choice.

1 Super Smash Bros Brawl Would Be One Of The Best Crossover Movies Ever

Super Smash Bros Brawl

One of the most revolutionary movies ever made was The Avengersbringing together superheroes that already had their own films, and the same thing could happen again with Nintendo characters.

Super Smash Bros Brawl, the third installment in the epic gaming crossover, had a campaign, The Subspace Emissary, and though some changes would need to be made as Nintendo doesn't own all of the characters in it, it would be a phenomenal movie. If a Nintendo Cinematic Universe ever exists, this story would need to be part of it.
