WARNING: Spoilers for Nightwing #79 by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas & Wes Abbott, on sale now.

Nightwing is in a period of transition right now. Dick Grayson knows he lost a portion of his life when he lost his memory and ended up drifting away from his goal of protecting people. However, the latest issue plays with the theme of Dick always having a safety net when he falls.

This safety net included his parents before they died. It includes the two men he considers his father figures — Batman and Alfred. It also includes the men he calls his brothers — Tim Drake, Jason Todd and Damian Wayne. In this issue, he clearly embraces another safety net in Barbara Gordon, and now he has Oracle looking out for him at all times.

Dick is a billionaire now, thanks to the inheritance he received from Alfred, who happened to be as wealthy as Bruce Wayne. He now wants to create a safety net for the city by Bludhaven. He helped a group of hungry people on the streets and then realized a kid picked his pocket. As he set out to find the young thieves as Nightwing, Oracle gave him something she created to use as part of his uniform. It was a new mask, one that is more high-tech than just a pair of goggles. These have hidden cameras in them, and Oracle can see everything that Nightwing sees when he sees it. She is not only his woman in the chair but his eyes as well.

Nightwing and Oracle

Nightwing took them out for a test drive. He had Oracle in his ear the entire time he was out on the streets. She could also see what he saw, so when he noticed the kids who picked his pocket also pick the pocket of the mobster Boss Maroni, he knew that these young thieves were the least of the dangers on the streets. Maroni's men pulled guns and went after the children, so Nightwing leapt into action and took the men down. The entire time, Oracle talked in his ear as she watched his every move in the fight. Oracle then cut out to call the police to arrest Maroni's men, only to find out the police wouldn't do anything since this mobster rules the streets.

It is interesting to see Dick Grayson have this new tech that puts Oracle in his eyes and ears every step of the way. This is one of the same tools Spider-Man got recently. For Spider-Man, it is a little different. Peter Parker took a job working for Threats & Menaces, a job that some consider selling out, but Spider-Man explains is no different than when he was selling photos to the Daily Bugle of him fighting as Spider-Man. In this case, everyone can see through his eyes, as Threats & Menaces broadcasts it on the Internet as a live stream whenever he agrees to allow it to be turned on. There is another similarity here. Just like Nightwing had Oracle talking in his ear the entire time, Spider-Man has J. Jonah Jameson talking to him.

J Jonah Jameson and Spider-Man

While the tech is very similar, there are differences in the purpose. Jameson is talking to Spider-Man and giving him directions for the live stream. Often, he asks him to use a special move, give a call-out to a fan, or fulfill other online fan requests while he is in action. It is all for entertainment purposes. While Spider-Man believes live streaming in action hurts Kingpin, allowing people to see the dangers he allows to go on in their city, the overall idea of Spider-Man's new costume is far from pure. On the other hand, only Oracle sees through Nightwing's mask, and she is part of the Bat-Family, able to give important information about criminals or lead Dick where he needs to go through tracking devices. Nightwing uses his new tech as a purely offensive weapon to fight crime and protect Bludhaven, making his version much more legitimate than anything Spider-Man is using right now.
