The following article contains spoilers from Nightwing #95, on sale now.

Nightwing's war against Blockbuster has called in help from his closest allies. It may also have created the foundation to undo one of the greatest mistakes in the DC Universe. Nightwing #95 (by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Caio Filipe, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott) saw Batwoman join Nightwing to speak with Maggie Sawyer, the new commissioner of Bludhaven.

This is the first time they have interacted since Batwoman broke up with Maggie years back during her solo run. Back then, Kate Kane intended to marry Maggie but backed out due to her experiences making her doubt the strength of their relationship. That was in-universe anyway. In our world, editorial differences ultimately prevented the wedding. At the time, Kate believed she did the right thing. Now, however, she has come to accept it as the biggest mistake of her life. With this encounter, perhaps it is also one that she can correct within the pages of Nightwing.

During the New 52, Kate formed a strong connection with Maggie. In time, she even revealed all her secrets to Maggie before asking to marry her. The two would likely have had a very successful marriage, but editorial differences within DC prevented it from happening. Kate ended up leaving Maggie a letter citing her reasons for simply up and abandoning their life together, and the two haven't spoken since then.

At the time, Kate believed she had done the right thing. Maggie had gotten back custody of her daughter, and Kate didn't want to do anything that might damage that re-engaged relationship. Kate's lingering trauma from such a fate contributed to this fear. She wanted neither to distract Maggie from her role with their relationship nor endanger the child with her superhero activities. That was why she had no regrets beyond hurting Maggie in the aftermath.

Now, however, she realizes it was a mistake. It was possible for her to be happy with Maggie, but her "stupidity and stubbornness," as she put it, blinded her to the possibility of happiness. Perhaps this was Tom Taylor's way of criticizing the choice at the time, but one thing is certain: Batwoman's life did not improve without Maggie in it.

Batwoman Regrets Leaving Maggie Sawyer

The lingering pain on both sides comes through in Nightwing #95. Batwoman is awkward and trying to respect Maggie, while her former fiancee is clearly trying to maintain professional composure. Neither party is especially good at it, though. It is obvious Batwoman's abrupt departure still pains Maggie and has caused her to distrust Kate's intentions.

However, Nightwing, ever the optimist, seems to be interested in helping the two reconnect, even if only to put old ghosts to rest. This leads to the exciting possibility that Batwoman may get back together with Maggie, undoing the mistake she made so long ago. Considering Tom Taylor's preference for having heroes work together in his books, it seems likely that Batwoman might appear more and more in Bludhaven to help Nightwing. With any luck, she might also be able to fix what she broke so long ago.
