WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Nightwing #88, on sale now.

Dick Grayson has taken on a new mission in his personal life as he tries to use the money Alfred Pennyworth left him to improve the city of Bludhaven. This has, quite predictably, upset a number of the city's elite, who do not wish for positive change to come to the city for fear of their power diminishing. As a consequence, they put a hit out on Dick Grayson, making his civilian identity more dangerous than being Nightwing.

In Nightwing #88 (by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, as well as AndWorld Design), the effects of this fact were demonstrated when Dick forwent reaching out for extra help at an event he was participating in. This repeated the same loner attitude that Batman has always had. One that has come back to haunt him more than once and if Dick's wishes had been honored he would likely be dead right now.

Dick was about to break ground on the site of a new community center. Even though he knew how dangerous it would be to show himself like that, he went through with it, asking that Oracle stay away for fear that she may be injured. Naturally, Oracle refused to honor such an illogical request and not only attended but also got the Titans to help keep an eye on Dick during his speech.

This turned out to be the right choice. Blockbuster had hired two assassins to kill Dick and had the Titans not been there Dick would have gotten shot in the head again. The sight of his friends rallied around him though reminded Dick of the most important lesson he ever learned about being a hero: That he was never alone. There will always be someone for him to reach out to if he needs help. More to the point, he should have reached out a long time ago.

It is an interesting situation to find him in. Nightwing has always been the most social of the Bat-Family. He forms attachments as easily as he breathes. In fact, it is often Nightwing who reminds the family that they can lean on one another for support when they need it and that sometimes it takes a group of people to get the job done. This attitude is in stark contrast to Batman, who operates alone for the sake of efficiency, believing other people would get in the way.

Now granted, Nightwing didn't forgo his friends' help because he believed them incapable. This situation was remarkably different from Bruce's. This was a job for Dick Grayson, not a costumed hero, but a concerned citizen. The job itself, while dangerous, was also time-consuming and would require more than a night on patrol to complete. The desire not to drag his friends into his problems stemmed from a place of love and fear for their safety and personal lives. Dick is selfless to a fault, but that attitude, while his most admirable quality, almost got him killed. Fortunately, Dick is more capable of learning from his mistakes than Batman ever was and remembered that he was part of a community that took care of one another.
