Everybody loves Dick Grayson. From his roles as Robin, Nightwing, and even Batman, the original Boy Wonder holds a special place in the hearts of fans. As does the future presented in Batman Beyond. Though Terry McGinnis took up the mantel of the Bat in the DC Animated Universe series, there was still the question of what happened to Bruce's original protege in the future of Neo-Gotham.

As it happens, there's more than one answer to that question. Though some Batman Beyond comics in the past have followed a continuity closer to the lore of the show in the DCAU, others, like the DC Rebirth series, have imagined Terry McGinnis in the future of the mainstream DC Universe.

The first fate of Dick Grayson was revealed in the Batman Beyond: Hush Beyond limited series by Adam Beechen, Ryan Benjamin, John Stanisci, David Baron, and Travis Lanham. Although this story referenced characters and events that hadn't taken place in the DCAU, like Tommy Elliot's Hush, for instance, its world was closer to what fans would remember from the animated series.

The Dick Grayson in this story comes as quite a surprise after seeing him as one of the joyous and more hopeful characters in Batman's life. When the Joker kidnapped Alfred, Bruce had been working on his own for a long time. Nevertheless, he teamed up with Nightwing for this one crucial mission. Unfortunately, it had been so long since Bruce had worked with anyone else that his solo thinking led to him inadvertently putting Dick straight in the line of fire. While Batman went after Joker, Nightwing was left on the street until emergency services could get to him. Having been left almost paralyzed by the incident, he retired from crimefighting.

When the older Dick met Terry's Batman, he helped him solve the mystery of the new Hush. It turned out that the new villain was a clone, created by Amanda Waller and Cadmus Labs from DNA collected during Nightwing's last tragic outing. The clone had all of the memories of the real Grayson and wanted revenge on Bruce. Once the case had been resolved, the original Dynamic Duo was finally on speaking terms again.

The other Batman Beyond fate of Dick Grayson takes place in the Futures End timeline. In this version, there was no bad blood between Dick and Bruce, and the retired Nightwing has a much happier life than the one from Hush Beyond. Blüdhaven's protector is now its mayor and has a daughter called Elainna.

Dick Grayson returns in Batman Beyond comics

Though Dick told Elainna all about his glory days as Robin and Nightwing, he tried as hard as he could to keep her out of the life he used to lead. That didn't stop her from becoming Batwoman Beyond though. It's hardly surprising, seeing as her father rushed to the new Batman and Robin's aid when Joker returned to Neo-Gotham. In the end, he supported his daughter's choice to be a hero. He even gave her a high-tech suit like Terry's, one that Bruce originally made for either Dick or Barbara before they both retired.

He also helped the Bat-Family stop the League of Assassin's plans to destroy all life on Earth, and not just as support, but in the field too. It seems that, even as the mayor of Blüdhaven, Dick can't stop being a hero in this version of Batman Beyond's future.

Both of these future versions of Dick Grayson are wildly different. The first is reminiscent of the traumatic fate of Tim Drake from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, whilst the latest is more hopeful and in keeping with the character currently in the DCU. Still, both interpretations stay true to the Batman mythos in their own ways.
