Nicolas Cage spent his childhood believing he was an alien.

In an interview with Rampstyle, Cage revealed his father remarked how he was "such an alien," which led the actor to believe he came from another planet. The Ghost Rider star recalled his "shocked" reaction after visiting a doctor's office as a child. "I found out that I had normal organs and a normal skeleton," Cage said. "I was certain I was from another planet." Coincidentally, Cage became interested in the film industry after watching David Bowie's The Man Who Fell to Earth.

While Cage isn't an extraterrestrial, his past method acting approaches aren't far from outlandish. For the 1984 Vietnam War film Birdy, Cage had his baby teeth extracted without anesthetic to emulate a soldier's experience. Additionally, the actor covered his head in bandages for five straight weeks, wearing them even to sleep, after a bomb explosion injured his character.

As a member of the notorious Coppola family, Cage had an early start to his acting career. However, Francis Ford Coppola, Cage's uncle, didn't play favorites with his nephew regarding film roles. Cage auditioned to play Dallas Winston in Coppola's The Outsiders, but the director cast Matt Dillon instead. Additionally, Coppola rejected his own nephew again after he begged to play Vincent Corleone in The Godfather Part III.

Nicolas Cage Is a National Treasure

Since his early film roles, Cage gained prominence in 2004's National Treasure as protagonist Benjamin Franklin Gates. The Disney movie follows a historian who uncovers a Freemason treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. In addition to Cage, National Treasure also stars Harvey Keitel, Jon Voight, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, Justin Bartha and Christopher Plummer. In 2007, the film received a sequel titled National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Disney unveiled the first footage of National Treasure: Edge of History. The Disney+ series is a spinoff from the original film series, with Keitel and Bartha returning as guest stars and new characters. Edge of History follows a much younger cast with actors like Lisette Oliviera, Zuri Reed and Antonio Cipriano. While Cage won't appear in the first 10 episodes, he will allegedly make a cameo in Season 2. However, that's not where the actor's involvement with the National Treasure franchise could stop.

Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the National Treasure films, previously teased the possibility of a third feature-length movie. "We're certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we're working on one for the big screen," Bruckheimer said. "Hopefully, they'll both come together."

The first two episodes of National Treasure: Edge of History are available to stream on Disney+.
