As fans to find out who will be playing The Joker in Todd Phillips' planned origin movie, Nicolas Cage confesses he's always thought he'd be perfect for the role of the iconic Batman villain.

Over the years, the likes of Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto have portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime, but Cage thinks there's one name missing from the list: his.

While speaking with JoBlo, the 54-year-old actor was asked if there were any comic book roles he might still be interested in tackling. While the he was famously tapped to star as Superman in Tim Burton's abandoned film, took the lead in two Ghost Rider movies and appeared in Kick-Ass, Cage admitted his superhero-movie days may be behind, him unless he were to play a villain -- someone like The Joker.

"I mean, I think my comic book days are kind of ... I'm on to other things," he said, "but I always thought I'd make a great Joker and I always thought that I would've been a good villain in one of the Marvel [movies] like Doctor Doom. But, Doctor Doom you have to wear that mask, but I thought the story leading up to Doctor Doom could've been interesting. At this point if I was to go back into the format it would probably have to be as a villain."

Returning to The Joker, Cage added, "It would be the perfect one for me to go even more off the rails than I've ever done before and, y'know, it'd be fun."

There is no denying that The Joker is among the most sought-after roles in Hollywood, but how would Cage fit into the lineup of actors to play the part? Joaquin Phoenix is a rumored frontrunner to star as the iconic villain, but it's unclear whether he actually knows that, while Tommy Wiseau has tried to gather support for his own campaign to play The Joker.

As for Cage, his villainous turns in movies like Face/Off give a hint of what he could be like as Batman's arch-nemesis. Playing the unhinged Castor Troy, Cage was exactly the kind of psychotic figure that Joker is known for being — simply being mad for the sake of being mad. The only problem is, with The Joker movie set as an origin story, it's expected that Warner Bros. will search for a slightly younger actor to fill the role.
