10 Archie One-Shots: Big Moose & Little Sabrina

If you've been enjoying the CW's subversive, live-action take on Archie in "Riverdale," have already been digging the modern "Waidverse" of Archie titles, or just want to jump onto the Archie bandwagon, you'll definitely want to check out the publisher's new one-shots "Big Moose" and "Little Sabrina." Set to spotlight Riverdale's premier jock, "Big Moose" follows the titular meathead, his love life with Midge and his rivalry with Reggie Mantle. Meanwhile, "Little Sabrina" continues the tradition of Art Baltazar and Franco's cutesy take on fan-favorite genre characters by offering a light-hearted tale focused on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Archie's been knocking it out of the park with its diverse titles, and these one-shots seem to be a continuation of that, serving up not only canonical Archie stories, but alternate takes from popular creators.

9 Z Nation

As Syfy's "Z Nation" ramps up for its third season, Dynamite Entertainment is set to serve up a canonical prequel series titled "Z Nation: Black Summer," from co-writer and "Z Nation" co-creator Craig Engler, fan-favorite writer Fred Van Lente and artist Edu Menna. Set two years before the events of the hit TV series, "Black Summer" will delve into the untold tales that shaped the characters as we know them on the small screen. On the new series, Van Lente said in an official press release, "Z-Nation is my kind of zombie story -- full of equal parts gore and fun, with lots of great characters too. I am thrilled to be exploring the mythology of some of the fan-favorite heroes on the show and capturing the early days of the Z-pocalypse. And to do it with my friend and co-creator Craig Engler is an extra special treat."

Featuring Z Nation’s signature blend of horror, humor and heart, Black Summer is the start of a new six-issue miniseries from acclaimed writer Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies, G.I. If there's one combination we're fans of, it's James Bond and casinos! And if that's not enough, the issue promises a confrontation with a "beautiful, mysterious assassin whose mission might be dangerously complicated with [Bond's]." If you've been yearning for some new 007 material, and "Spectre" didn't quite cut it for you, Dynamite's new Bond series isn't to be missed.

7 Judge Dredd: Blessed Earth

If you've missed your regular dose of Judge Dredd, fear not: IDW has the perfect solution. Kicking off in April, "Judge Dredd: Blessed Earth" is set to serve up an apocalyptic tale starring everyone's favourite badass cop from the future, in a story set 10 year after the events of "Mega-City Zero."

“It’s much easier to write Judge Dredd when you feel like your country is falling apart,” series writer Ulises Fariñas recently told io9. “It’s really easy to write about failing institutions and people left to their own devices, when the people who should protect them are just trying to legitimize their power. We hear ‘to serve and protect,’ and it sounds more and more like a sick joke. We are turning Dredd literally inside out, ripping out what’s inside him and seeing what makes him keep moving forward. The system only works when people believe in it, and in The Blessed Earth, I AM THE LAW are not words anyone believes in.”

5 Batman/The Shadow

DC Comics and Dynamite Entertainment are partnering for a showdown between comics' two greatest detectives: Batman and The Shadow. Hitting stands in April, the new series comes from the all-star creative team of writers Scott Snyder (“Batman,” “All-Star Batman”) and Steve Orlando (“Midnighter and Apollo,” “Justice League of America”), and artist Riley Rossmo (“Batman,” “Constantine: The Hellblazer”). The tale will see the Dark Knight follow a murder trail, while the Shadow does everything in his power to stop the Caped Crusader from learning too much. “Batman is a myth that transcends the comic book page and inspires us to achieve, while The Shadow is the cornerstone of so much of the pop culture and comics we see today,” Orlando said of the series. “To bring together the World’s Greatest Detective and the World’s Greatest Mystery is an honor.”

4 Supergirl #8

Are you a fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes and wondering what exactly they're up to in light of DC's Rebirth? April will likely bring some answers with the arrival of Steve Orlando and Matias Bergara's "Supergirl" #8. The issue promises a team-up between Batman and Batgirl, in an effort to take on the villainess Emerald Empress, who recently appeared in the "Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad" crossover. How does that involve the Legion, exactly? Well, in "Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad," we learned that Emerald Empress is on the hunt for Saturn Girl -- a member of the Legion -- which leads us to believe she'll cross paths with the character (who's currently held up at Arkham Asylum) by the time Supergirl #8 rolls around. Plus, Orlando is also writing the new "Justice League of America" ongoing series, so we're sure he's planting the seeds for more Emerald Empress stories (or other Legion hints) in this "Supergirl" tale.

3 Nick Fury

Nick Fury Jr. is set to star in his first ongoing series this April helmed by writer James Robinson and artist ACO. Poised to team the Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Frank Noble, Agent of HYDRA, the Jim Steranko-influenced series will serve up single issue stories and short story arcs. “It isn’t that I’m mad for either single issues or for long multipart arcs," Robinson explains. "It’s whatever suits the comic and the character at that time. In this instance, the Fury we had in mind and the missions we intend to send him on, suited the single issue format.”

“I think ACO and I are both in love with the style of that time," Robinson said with regard to his and ACO's "Nick Fury" take. "The clothing, pop art, bold graphics, and the fact that this was a time when spy fiction was at its peak, no doubt tying in with the Cold War that was going on. It’s interesting that this book found its way at a time when Russia seems to be getting up to its old tricks, so maybe we’re tapping into the zeitgeist now too."

2 Batman/Flash: The Button

With the acclaimed "DC Universe: Rebirth" special, Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Phil Jimenez and Ethan Van Sciver not only reset the continuity of the DCU, they set the stage for a possible crossover with the heroes of the DCU and the characters of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal superhero deconstruction, "Watchmen." The "Watchmen" hints have continued over the past year, and the characters are set to be a major factor in a new crossover, titled "The Button," in the pages of "Batman" and "The Flash." Set to be tackled by the regular "Batman" and "Flash" creative teams -- which consist of Tom King and Jason Fabok, and Joshua Williamson and Howard Porter, respectively -- "The Button" will delve into the mysterious emergence of the Comedian's Button in the walls of the Batcave.

1 Star Wars: Rogue One Adaptation

Just like every other "Star Wars" film before it, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is set to get its own comic book adaptation in April, this time from writer Jody Houser and artist Emilio Laiso. The offering is exciting, not just because it brings "Rogue One" to comics, but it's also supposedly set to serve up never-before-seen material from the film. Regardless of whether or not the material comes from deleted scenes, we're curious to see what exactly the comic has to say apart from the film.

Houser teased with regard to the "Rogue One" comic book adaptation, "The comics will definitely expand on what was seen in both Rogue One the film and the novelization. Lucasfilm and Gareth Edwards had a bunch of ideas for extra scenes and character moments that didn’t make it into the film. I’m having a lot of fun playing around with those. Adaptations across different forms of media have always been a great opportunity to explore other facets of the story, and we’re excited to have new material in the Rogue One comic."
