Nicolas Cage and the team behind 2007's Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, may have had noble intentions to service comic book lovers, but the execution of these movies left a lot to be desired. Well, now Cage seems to know how to give the Rider a second shot, reiterating that an R-rated take is just the remedy.

"Had Ghost Rider been made in R-rated format, the way they had the guts to do with Deadpool, and they did it again today, I’m fairly certain it would be enormously successful," he said to Yahoo Entertainment, opening up on the critically-panned franchise.

"Having said that, I still think the movies were a hit," said Cage. "People don’t look at the subsidiary outlets, like DVD and streaming and whatnot. When you look at what Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor did [on 2012’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance] for $50 million, and they got a $250 million return, you begin to see the genius of the sequel."

Be that as it may, fans, like critics, have been unkind when it comes to heaping praise on the film, although some do consider it a cult favorite thanks to Cage, being, well... Cage. His take on Johnny Blaze may not have been the most well-received, but he would surely find loyalists who've long called for Marvel Studios to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe's supernatural realm in the wake of Doctor Strange's success, especially with Gabriel Luna as a new rider, Robbie Reyes, on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
