DC has released preview pages and a wealth of variant covers for its new Black Label horror series The Nice House on the Lake.

The series, written by James Tynion IV (Batman) and illustrated by Álvaro Martínez Bueno (Justice League Dark), focuses on a group of young men and women who are associated with a mysterious man named Walter. Walter eventually invites the group to his lakeside retreat, which promises to be the vacation of a lifetime. However, the lake house -- and by extension, Walter -- is not what it seems.

"I've always thought of myself as a horror writer… I like taking the things that I'm afraid about and turning them into monsters for my characters to grapple with," Tynion IV said while describing the series. "In superhero comics, you can always turn away at the last minute, and boil that conflict down into people in fun costumes punching each other. The Nice House On The Lake is trying to hit at deeper nerve, and the goal is to reach that final last moment and sit with the horror rather than turning away."

The Nice House on the Lake will also feature a series of special variant covers from participating comic book retailers. Among the artists providing special variants are Francesco Francavilla and Megan Hutchinson-Cates, as well as horror artist David Romero.

The Nice House on The Lake is part of DC's push into the horror genre, as it has also launched a new imprint titled DC Horror. Among the titles in DC's Horror imprint is The Conjuring: The Lover miniseries, which acts as a prequel to the events of The Conjuring 3. DC also launched the pop-up imprint Hill House Comics from horror writer Joe Hill in 2019.

Written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Álvaro Martínez Bueno, The Nice House on the Lake #1 goes on sale on June 1 from DC Comics.
