Ever since its debut in 2013, popular horror-thriller franchise The Purge has thrilled audiences around the world with its four film installments collectively earning over $447 million at the global box office.

With the latest installment, this year's prequel The First Purge, earning $136.2 million worldwide, franchise creator James DeMonaco has revealed plans to end the film series with its next installment.

"I think I’m going to write it. I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited," explained DeMonaco in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home."

DeMonaco has written all four films in The Purge franchise and directed the first three while serving as an executive producer on The First Purge. Additionally, DeMonaco developed an adaptation of the franchise for television on the USA Network, serving as executive producer and writer.

Following a dystopian vision of America with a twelve-hour period where all crimes are made legal each year, the franchise has been cited as one of the primary causes of home studio Blumhouse Productions recent rise to success as one of the premier independent American film studios.
