All attendees at New York Comic Con 2022 will be required to wear face coverings during this year's convention."We will be requiring approved face coverings for New York Comic Con 2022 throughout all areas of the show, and we are strongly recommending the use of high-quality masks, such as a certified N95, KN95, or KN94 mask," a Twitter message from ReedPop's Vice President of Events Kristina Rogers reads. "This decision isn't one we take lightly or without much discussion about the best course of action," the message continues. "At the end of the day, New York Comic Con is the largest pop culture convention in the United States. More fans, creators, and folks from across the industry come through our doors over the course of four days than most concerts, sporting events, and festivals. We feel this is the best way to ensure all of you have a safe and healthy time geeking out with us over the best 4-day weekend of the year."

New York Comic Con was attended by roughly 151,000 people in 2017, surpassing San Diego Comic-Con's attendance cap of 130,000 and technically making it the largest comic convention in North America. Attendance at the convention remained strong until the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw 2020's New York Comic Con opt for a virtual event instead.

The convention reopened in 2021, but instituted a mandatory mask policy, with all attendees over the age of 12 required to show proof of vaccination. Mask restrictions provided an interesting challenge for cosplayers, many of whom incorporated their face coverings into the costumes. Rogers' message specifically addressed these concerns. "The most common question related to any face covering requirement centers...around the use of helmets and cosplay masks," it reads. "We request that you arrive without your helmet on and remove any cosplay masks (sorry, superheroes) so that we can verify you're wearing an approved face covering. You may wear your helmet/mask after entering, and if you choose to do so you must have an approved face covering on as well. It can get hot under those helmets and cosplay masks, so take breaks periodically to give yourself a chance to recharge."

Masks are not required for photo ops with celebrities at New York Comic Con but must be worn as attendees wait in line. Similar restrictions were in place at 2021's convention, though plexiglass dividers were also inserted in between fans and guests to ensure safety and comfort during photo ops.

New York Comic Con runs from Oct. 6-9 in New York City's Javits Convention Center. More information on this year's health and safety protocols is available on New York Comic Con's website.
