New York Comic Con releases expanded guest list for their February show

Officials at New York Comic Con (NYCC) have today revealed the names of several notable guests who will be appearing at NYCC in association with Vanguard, the world's leading producer of art book biographies on illustrators and cartoonists.  Vanguard and the New York Comic Con have enjoyed a unique relationship since the very first NYCC.  In past years Vanguard has helped secure appearances by Neal Adams, Joe Simon, Joe Kubert, Irwin Hasen, Bill Sienkiewicz, Arnold Drake and more. Among the many top guests who will be greeting fans at the Vanguard booth this time will be New York Comic Con Guest of Honor, Carmine Infantino, as well as J. David Spurlock who, in addition to his own creative achievements, is the founder of Vanguard.  Other legendary guests appearing thanks to Vanguard include: Frank Brunner, Rich Buckler, Basil Gogos, and Jim Steranko (see detailed credits below).

            FRANK BRUNNER:  The work of Frank Brunner reflects a unique sensibility, combining heroic design, lush eroticism with a touch of whimsy. After a long career of work for many top animation studios, this seminal illustrator of the classic Dr. Strange, Warp, Elric, and Howard the Duck has recently been showcased in a deluxe, lavish color hardcover Vanguard retrospective of his comics and fantasy art entitled MYTHOS: The Fantasy art Realms of Frank Brunner. In the book, as in his convention appearances, Brunner displays a luxurious spread of subjects and characters: Conan, Dr. Strange, Faeries, Elric, Alice in Wonderland, Bran Mac Morn, Howard the Duck, Black Widow, Dragons, Red Sonja, Superman, Clea, Jonny Quest, Pirates of Dark Water, Wizards and more all-in-all a fantasy-art tour de force. Classic Marvel comics and Fantasy artist Frank Brunner will be signing and sketching at the Vanguard booth, 1857.


            RICH BUCKLER:  Rich has had a significant career in comics for decades with major runs on many DC and Marvel titles including Fantastic Four, Avengers, Sub-Mariner, Spectacular Spider-Man, X-Men, New Mutants, X Factor, Teen Titans, Superman vs. Shazam and his cyborg creation, Deathlok. His inclusion in both the DC and Marvel US Postage Stamp sets is a worthy accolade for his long career. Most recently, Buckler has released through Vanguard®, How to Draw Dynamic Comic Books which he wrote with contributions from Stan Lee and Roy Thomas.             BASIL GOGOS:  The World's most famous monster artist and legendary cover artist of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, movie posters and albums including CD covers for Rob Zombie, the Misfits and Electric Frankenstein. Gogos is appearing in support of his run-away hit Vanguard art book biography, The Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos with intro by Rob Zombie which has been raved about in the Village Voice, Time Out New York, Rue Morgue, Fantagoria, and won the RONDO Award for Horror Art Book of the Year! Don't miss this opportunity to shake the hand of a true (and monstrous) legend that has endeared himself to millions of fans including filmmakers Roger Corman, Rick Baker, Peter Jackson as well as the Karloff, Lagosi and Chaney families.             MICHAEL GOLDEN: Groundbreaking comics creator Michael Golden is known for his unique art style and signature storytelling construction which has garnered him a legion of devotees that number not only comic readers, but other artists as well. Co-creator of the X-men's Rogue, Golden's work can be seen in The 'Nam, Micronauts, G.I. Joe Yearbook, Dr. Strange, Nightwing, Detective, Heroes for Hire and Iron Man among much more. Other milestones in Golden's career include the co-creation of Bucky O'Hare, which led to an animated series and toy line designed by Michael, as well as Spartan X with editor/writer Renee Witterstaetter.             CARMINE INFANTINO:  This legendary creator, with 3 US Postage Stamps to his credit, will always be remembered as the personification of DC Comics' Silver Age. Infantino helped to resurrect a dying comics industry in 1956, as the artist who launched the Silver Age with his co-creation; the FLASH and remains the best-loved Flash artist of all-time. Infantino proved one of the all-time, great sci-fi artists with both ADAM STRANGE and STAR WARS.  In 1964 he and Julius Schwartz saved BATMAN from impending cancellation with the "New Look" and co-created Batgirl--all of which inspired the '60s BATMAN TV-show and movie. Infantino became an innovative Publisher and President at DC, launching comic books of pulp characters; the Shadow & Tarzan, the socially-relevant Adams-O'Neil GREEN LANTERN-GREEN ARROW series; Jack Kirby's FOURTH WORLD saga; the revival of SHAZAM; pay raises; royalties; DC-Marvel crossover books including SUPERMAN vs. SPIDER-MAN (for which he designed the cover) and; the return of original art to freelancers. Infantino's film and TV credits include SUPERMAN film I & II, SUPER-FRIENDS, ISIS & SHAZAM.             J. DAVID SPURLOCK:  This prolific, award-winning author, editor and illustrator is a pop-culture historian and advocate for artists' rights who, has served as President of the Society of Illustrators in Dallas, in addition to working with many of the greatest names in the history of illustration and cartooning including Carmine Infantino, Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Julius Schwartz, Basil Gogos, Joe Kubert, the Wally Wood Estate and more. Spurlock's career also includes work for Disney, Sony, Vanguard, DC, Dark Horse, and MTV. Works by Spurlock include, Wally's World: Life & Death of Wally Wood, RGK: Art of Roy G. Krenkel, The Space Cowboy, Steranko Art Noir, Joe Kubert: Drawing from Life, and Paintings of J. Allen St. John.             JIM STERANKO:  As an illustrator, musician, art director, magician, photographer, fire-eater, designer, escape artist, filmmaker, pop-culture lecturer, and publisher, Steranko has cut a ferocious path through the entertainment arts. The more than 100 innovations he created as artist-writer on Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D., CAPTAIN AMERICA, and X-MEN revolutionized the comics form and, as an illustrator, he painted a multitude of book covers, record jackets, and movie posters, including 30 SHADOW paperbacks. He has shown his work at more than 200 exhibitions worldwide, including the Louvre in Paris and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. His two volumes of THE HISTORY OF COMICS have sold more than 100,000 copies and as editor-publisher of the international entertainment magazine PREVUE, he conducted hundreds of star interviews and penned more than three million words.  As a filmmaker, he has collaborated with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola on some of their most popular movies. Steranko has been cited by Michael Chabon as an inspiration for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, by Jack Kirby as inspiration for Mister Miracle, and, by WIZARD as one of the Top Five Most Influential Comicbook Artists of All Time. Recent projects include Domino Lady: The Complete Collection (Vanguard), The Discovery Channel's Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked documentary, the 2007 Steranko Calendar-Portfolio (Vanguard), STARZ network's Comicbooks Unbound, and writing an episode of Cartoon Network's Justice League series.             MARK TEXEIRA: Renowned comics illustrator and Mark Texeira is a New York area native who is happy to be part of the ever-growing New York Comic Con in celebration of his home city. A classically trained fine art painter, Texeira's work has appeared on the frontage of Conan, Vampirella, Ghost Rider, Maxim Magazine" and much, much more, including cover assignments for books, magazines, and record albums involving such properties as Remo Williams, Buckaroo Banzai, and Public Enemy.
